cl2ysta1 and dew2loud1's 900g Starphire in the desert

Stand height is still something I'm debating on. We have 9 foot ceilings in the tank addition, and I was thinking of going around four feet ( I am 6'2" by the way), but I do understand what you are saying about presentation and seeing the acros from the top down. I do like the look of a taller tank that is over my sight line as well though. Our stand on our cube now is 40" and the tank is 30", so this setup will be significantly taller

I know reefski's tank is actually nearly on the ground and gives an entirely different effect. I'm adding a look down lagoon that is going to be similar in dimensions to the tank and lit almost entirely by sunlight to get that effect.

Either way cleaning will be a pita, there is no way around making a 36" deep tank easy to clean, no sand bed, high flow and a good magnet are about as good as you can get on that front. Either that or a snorkle mask.

For stand design I'm still up in the air, about a traditional welded stand or the concrete block/ I beam stand.
I prefer minimal bracing and like the look of large diameter steel tube, ie 4" or 6" and could get away with less verticals using this large diameter steel.
The concrete and I beam stand would also allow me to have a much bigger span in the center unobstructed and cost would be substantially lower.
My designs have changed from having all the equipment in the basement fishroom to incorporating everything into the addition which substantially limits the space I once had. Blame crystal for that one. The benefits however are that it will be much easier to manage humidity and cooling/heating with everything, out of the house.

Where does one purchase a Volcano skimmer?
BTW awesome build! Have you decided if the stand will be steel or wood?

Volcano skimmers are no longer being made, they were made by scott ledin at aquatic acrylics, but he closed up shop last fall. Once/If I get my acrylic tubes back from him I will be constructing my own version of the skimmer, I have 12 feet of 24" OD cast acrylic so I will most likely make several smaller ones and different body sizes so I can experiment with what works best.

I'm still debating on the stand being steel or concrete with steel I beams. The concrete/steel stand would be approximately 1/4 the price and would allow for no center braces. The downside is that it obviously is not movable once finished, not that I'm planning on moving this tank anytime soon.....

Our tentative plans for the tank include getting the stand made or the materials for what we need. We need to get our barn finished to get the hay out from teh carport and get it cleared out around the tank. We are going to start enclosing the carport in the spring when we start getting some good weather. Plan is to get it done by mid summer and we can than start finishing the fish room behind it along with the room in general.... We would like to have it completed by fall of next year and ready to start transferring things by mid winter. While we have a lot of rock/corals we really want to do this right and keep it pest free (we have some mojanos etc.) So... we are probably going to start it up with brand new lace rock (never seen salt water) and do something to the current stuff we have with pests on them (stupid mojanos).. We might cook them or just let them dry out prior to transferring them. We'll probably do a starboard bottom and not even bother gluing sand to it. All of our current tanks are bare bottom other than the 72 bowfront and to be frankly honest...

I LOVE BARE BOTTOMS!

We probably have our cube sold and will move everything to a large rubbermaid tank for holding. So this should help push completion :)

sorry to keep you all in suspense... I wish we had a bunch of money to have this thing up and running yesterday but that is sadly not the case!

No updates, like many others i got laid off and i'm considering selling it rather than set it up at less than its full potential.....

I love that tank, I saw it when it went for sale on our local web sight. You guys have a small ocean down there in cedar city. good luck with the build i will be following.

Well i guess i actually have a few updates believe it or not. We have been trying to sell the tank as i will be laid off again here in a few weeks, but with the economy the way it is its nearly impossible to sell....

So i started yesterday on building the stand. Main beams are 8"x4" x .25" steel with a reinforced angle iron gusset the full length, legs are 5"x5" 5/16" steel with 1/2" thick solid steel baseplates, and horizontals are 4"x4" 5/16" steel.

Hopefully i can finish getting it welded up today, the stand is ridiculously overbuilt and will weigh about 700+ lbs when done and will be bolted to the concrete floor.
I'll get some pictures up tonight

Nope, due to the dollar value involved it was a felony so i have another two years to take him to court (5yr statute of limitations) I just don't have the money to hire an attorney right now, hopefully i can pursue litigation next spring..... I really doubt even after that i will get any compensation or them back..... but i really hope i do.
I'm not sure how some people live with themselves.
