Clams under PCs

I am beginning to feel a little sorry for RFC here. He very politely and honestly gave his opinion on a matter, which is entirely his right on this forum. And many people are now belittling him. It doesnt matter how many times this has been posted, or what his occupation is, or anything, he has the right to ask or claim what he want. Differing opinions are the purpose of forums! RFC has been quite polite through this whole matter, and even though I dont agree at all with his assessemnt that clams should be kept under PC, I dont see the need to treat him as he has been in recent posts.

For the tenth time...

James - Perhaps we could come up with a caveat, as this question comes up quite often now. Something like:

"Although it's not impossible to keep Tridacna clams under fluorescent (PC, VHO, T5) lighting, 1 out of every (?) are able to survive for more than a year."

1 out of every 500 seems to be a conservative number, don't you think? Just so people understand there is a risk, and that these are live creatures they are dealing with:)

That's what I'd like for people to understand - but I wouldn't want to try to choose a specific number for each species, as each has different needs. I'd rather people just understand that all tridacnids are genetically diverse (even different individuals of the same species), and that some, like crocea, are very unlikely to survive long term under fluorescent lighting unless they are kept under intense fl. bulbs and not very far from them. I guess we could just say "a very small number" of them can survive under fluorescents unless they are kept close to the bulbs and lots of bulbs are used. As I said above, they can be kept in shallow tanks if enough bulbs are used, but that defeats the point of having a crocea in my opinion. They look their best in deeper tanks when placed on/near the bottom...

perdy nice equipment there!!!! i like the Infinity overture 3 series thats next to my 65'' TV carver amp & pre-amp ( aka pre sunfire ) nice place man!!!

ohhh need to ask you a quick Q? on the side, amp & preamp is a little old and planning to get a sunfire just because i know they are good stuff. Which modle do you think i should get?? and $$$ for one?? it needs to drive the Infinities and a pair Defnitives BP6 series ( i think, been a while ago i use them for rear speakers ) thx

For those who may be audiophiles, the speakers are Martin Logan Aerius I's, Scripts, and Cinema. Subwoofer is a paradigm which doesnt get much use (for my neighbors sake ). And electronics are sunfire amp/preamp. denon DVD. I need to update the TV sometime in the near future.

Nice rig you have there. Not much of an electrostat man myself, but I admire their qualities nonetheless. I run Dynaudio's & haven't looked back! :D

On a side note, your clam seems to be doing better from the last time I saw it.

Mine, well, I upgraded to MH's and have noticed substantial growth overall compared to PC's, although, there was growth under the PC's, no doubt.

Nice view :)

isn't that a window with no drapes right next to the tank? ( first RFK pic ) i can see the sun coming in on the floor. i bet with the angle of the tank to the window it could probably pick up an hour or two of natural sunlight.

i'm not trying to stir the pot, just trying to figure out how he is having some success where many others have failed.

WOW! seems poor Dustin 323 got lost in the fire storm of dialogue, but maybe he got his answer. As for RFC and his crocea clam, after looking at the gallery of RFC Graphics' photos, I convinced RFC can make even a slowly dying clam (if that's the case) look good. Hey RFC, give the die hard conservationists a break and go for a bigger and better light. Considering your location, the apartment and the furnishing, you've got the bucks. As for me, if I could, I'd take my crocea back to the LFS, but they'd only sell it to someone with less light than I have. So I'll keep it knowing all the time it is slowly dying but fighting desperately to keep up appearances; kind of like me who has many more years behind me than ahead of me. I know my $45 crocea will likely outlast the $75 christmas tree and $50 poinsettia decorating my home, and it has already out lived the $150 worth of ricordias purchased and lost last month. Like so many reefers, I do my research after my purchase.

I have a 55gal tank with 4 65w pc bulbs 2 10,000k and 2 actinic and I have a blue crocea clam on the bottom of the tank and it's been thriving for 3 or 4 years now he is one of the oldes members of my tank. ther is no excesive reaching or streaching for light. I dont have a camera to post a pic but you can look under the cmas forum under "tank pics take 2 " to see a pic a friend posted for me

triple j- no offense, but a claim like that is very hard to believe without photos. Can you please give me a link to where this photo is? What do you mean by "thriving"?

Hey RFC I would tell you that I had my 2 Crocea under PC for almost a year befor I moved and got my halide but.........
If you read my last post, I don't want to turn yours upsidedown aslo.

He He...

(But the always looked nice, and I still have them)

Squamosa clams do perfectly fine under PCs. Just get them fairly high in the tank, at least half way up in a 55 gallon. Mined more than doubled in size in a year. Keep the calcium and DKH in check and you are fine.

They do grow faster under MHs. I now have them under 400 watters.
