Hi guys and girls this is Joe. I recently converted to saltwater and bought my first clowns. They are supposed to be maroons but the 3rd clown I purchased is much darker than these. The front stipe doesn't look like a tomato from the pics i've seen though.

Adding another clown to two maroons is not really a good idea. Check out FAQ at the top of this forum.

I did after I purchased the three together and not seperate. Also are you saying they are maroons?

Those two in the pic are gold stripe maroons.

So the stripes change color as they age? I bought them for $14.99 each also (wasn't expecting them to be gold stipe).

goldstripe maroons have white stripes at first and then after about a year after hatching the stripes change color.

James, how do you know that they're GS? The stripes look pretty small which usually goes with WS. The GS have wider bands.

PS-they also look tank raised.

It really depends on the size of the clowns. Their stripes are usually pretty small and not even developed until pretty late in their postmetamorphasis. I for one, really can't tell with any certainty looking at baby maroons and predicting which ones will have gold bars and which ones won't. Also, there is a good bit of variation with the maroon clowns and I don't think you could always use stripe width to tell which ones are going to be goldbar.

Don't put three Maroons together. Sooner or later one will be kill by the other two. Return the middle size one back to the store. You may end up withe a pair. It is often difficult to pair Maroon.
