clown or nem first???

If your tank is mature/stable enough, I recommend adding the anemone first. IMO this makes the clowns more likely to host. If you add clowns first they will likely become attached to another object or coral and will be less willing to depart their old residence for the newly added nem. If you add the clowns after the nem they will choose a place in which they feel most secure upon introduction - the nem.

I had my nem first. It still took the clowns a while (a month or so) to figure out what they were supposed to do. However, if they had been attached to something else, who knows how long it would have taken. So I would have to agree with affictedreefer.

I put my nem in a month before i got clowns, it took my picasso and my percula a day or so before they were being hosted by the nem. From experience i also noticed that if introduce the clowns close to the nem they will swim for it right away looking for protection.

Clowns are a lot easier to keep than anemones. No anemone unless your tank have been doing well for a while. Know your anemone species so you can provide the correct condition for him. Clowns can go into the tank anytime after it cycle.

If his tank is established & he has now clowns at the moment then u would suggest he gets the nem first, given that his tank is ready & has adequate lighting & knowledge to care for it. If you just started get the clowns unless you are willing to wait

No my tanks not ready i think im gonna get a butterfly for a few months then add a nem when the time is right

Be careful. Depending on the butterfly species, it may nip on the anemone, as will many angels. There are plenty of other fish that pose no threat to an anemone.

To clarify a few of the previous posts -- assuming that the tank is mature and you possess the knowledge to care for an anemone, it really doesn't matter which you add first. If presented with their natural host species, most -- if not all clowns -- will quickly move from whatever they are hosting to the anemone. This is an innate characteristic and is not learned. It's similar to the attractive quality of catnip for many cats.

Introducing clowns near an anemone (without forcing them in) makes sense because clowns find their host anemones by smell. However, if the anemone is not the natural host, there is no guarantee that the clown will use it as a host.

I can report in in a few days as I have had 2 mocha clowns for a 4-5 months now and will be adding a rainbow BTA tonight or tomorrow. So I can at least give one first hand experience on how long it will take them to host the nem when adding it after the fish. Obviously doesnt prove anything, but might be helpful to some.

side note: I have not noticed my clowns hosting with anything else in the tank thus far, I thought they might go for the forgspawn or toadstool but they have left both alone, not much else for them to host with in my tank until now.
