Collecting fish in Hawaii????

79chopperdr

I killed ALL that Coral!
Awhile back I thought I read where someone was talking about collecting fish and inverts in Hawaii for personal use using a permit process.

My wife and I are taking a trip to Maui in October and plan on spending as much of my time snorkling/diving as possible which will be great. If I can collect some fish/ corals it will be even better!

Please share on how the process works!

Thanks

Ill send you a PM then give me a call.

I will explain the permit process and all rules and laws that I have found. I can also tell you about the other really fun parts like shipping them back. I went last October with permits and brought back fish, inverts and DEAD rock. I am going again this September for vacation and will do the same thing. If there is alot of interest I can post the sources I have collected in a Thread.

Just to clarify 95% percent of corals are illegal to collect in Hawaii. There are only like 3 or so species you can legal collect and they are all the ones you dont want. I will work on getting the cited sources to back this up.

You can collect one gallon per day per person of DEAD coral, rock, or sand. But no live sand or love rock.

Jeff,
Here are the basic regs. NO coral or live rock what so ever. Me and the wife were really thinking about doing this also. But after talking to a couple people who had tried it we changed our minds. The whole keeping them alive and getting them back becomes a real pain. Other than catching them right before you leave you pretty much have to turn your hotel room into a fish life support area. There is one company over there that will hold and ship your fish to you though but if I remember the cost was fairly high. And after talking to a member here who actually did it, we changed our minds. I won't mention his name because of the flaming he got when he posted pics of his catch in the coral forums here in this site. Maybe he will pm you. But he did tell us that the hardest part was the actual catching of the fish. I believe he ended up with a couple convict tangs.

Believe me, I am with you on this. It would be awesome to know I collected my own fish in my tank and know they were collected using methods other than some of the crappy ways commercial collectors use. But after some research I think we are just going to save a little more $$ and go somewhere around the Marshall Islands and focus on collecting some interesting invert and coral species and then have them shipped to us by a dealer. But if you do give it a whirl please take lots of pictures to share with us jealous folks here at home.

1.Licenses issued to individuals are non-transferable and cannot be used by anyone else.
2.This permit does not exempt me from any other regulation, except that I may use fine meshed traps or fine meshed nets, except throw nets, to take marine life and non-game freshwater fishes for aquarium purposes.
3.I may not take any aquatic life that is regulated (minimum size, closed season, bag limit, etc.) or use nets in any area prohibited by provisions of the Hawaii Revised Statutes or Administrative Rules of DLNR, Title 13.
4.I may not use any chemicals, electro-fishing devices or explosives to take aquatic life.
5.I may not kill, damage or take any live rock or live coral.
6.I may not collect any aquatic life in any area where the taking of aquatic life is prohibited.
7.I may not sell any aquatic life unless I have a valid commercial marine license. All such aquatic life must be sold for aquarium purposes, and not for sale as food.
8.If I intend to sell any aquatic life, I must submit reports as required by the commercial marine license.
9.I may not take any of the following:
■"˜oama (juvenile goatfish less than 7" fork length)
■"˜o'opu (freshwater goby)
■halalu (akule less than 8.5" fork length)
10.I must maintain the proper operation of facilities designed to keep fish alive and in reasonable health.
11.I must keep all aquatic life taken under this permit alive and in reasonable health.
12.I must allow DLNR to enforce its regulations and to inspect the facilities where the aquarium life is kept.
13.I must carry the permit while engaged in collecting aquatic life for aquarium purposes.
14.If I do not have a valid commercial marine license, I may not take more than a total of five aquatic life specimens per person per day.

You might read a bit closer, because it says very clearly that no coral may be taken, and you'll have to do a bit more research as to what is restricted fish wise.

I found the DAR website with all the regs above. I already applied for a permit.

Still interested in your feedback tweakes, I'll call you soon.

I now know coral and rock is off the table. If i can catch some fish I plan on just shipping them back to a reef buddy in Sac and have them here waiting on me, rather than trying to keep them alive in the hotel.

I'm also interested in renting a go-pro for this trip from somebody local. We are staying next to Black Rock on Maui, and I plan on diving Molokini crater. Some great videos could come from those spots!

I do have a go pro source. A guy who works with me is the producer for some dumb Jet Ski around earth show. But they are in the off season. Let me know how many you want and I'll see what I can do.

I have lots to share when you call. But if you are flying back Alaska Airlines I highly recommend bringing the fish back with you. I can not vouch as much for the airlines yet because I have not done it with them.

I have a hero 2(not the newest one), that i would rent out. Let me know.

In truth, I'm getting close to maxed on bioload. So I will be pretty picky, plus most the fish I would be interested in will be scarce and I'm not sure I'll be able to catch anything :). Maybe I will get lucky? Wrasses would be on the list. A Bandit angel would be worth selling off the Zoas.

I saw several wrasses the last time I went. I found one Dragon eel that I was able to catch but he was three feet long no way I could have brought him back. Sorry if you tried caling last night my phone died and I was a little busy at work feel free to call anytime today.I got some additional updated information from Hawall DLNR yesterday. And I was gretting ready to order some more equipment for catching fish so I could always send that with you in October after I try it out. But catching is by far the hardest part. I have a friend that does it professionally.

Man I can't even catch a fish with a net without tearing my tank apart. Good luck catching a wrasse in the ocean. Post pics if you get something. Lots really nice fish around there for sure.

Jeff,

I am sure a few of us wouldn't mind if you took us with you to block. I can free up some time if I had to. I mean it isn't that much of an inconvenience to take a FREE plane ride to HI...

:>

I wonder what the hurricane will do to the fish locations. During the meeting with Ret Talbot he mentioned large storms or hurricanes will move them.
