Hi there
i have baught a whole bunch of acros in last few weeks. for some reason all do good except purple validas or any purple color acros, i lost a miami orchard that was also blue/purple. i have a purple tip acro that never openned in my tank for 2 months now(not bleached still brown but not open). miami orchard and purple valida bleached white in few hours, i put valida under 20k MH about 18" from the light itself (so about 12" under water) in high flow almost direct flow of powerhead not quite thu. maimi orchard was in consistant flow from a sea swirl everytime it turns around but not direct and also about 18" from MH or 12" under water.
can u think of anything?

What are your water params, dosing anything, what salt? Etc? Those are the easiest colors for me it's the yellows I have trouble with. If you are just losing these coral all together, are you getting them from the same source? Pests? Lots of variables to be considered.

Were they wild?

I don't like reactors, 2 part is much better. You ca is high, your alk is low and your mag is kinda high. IMO.

Can we get a full tank shot and some pics of your patients?

Did you acclimate them to your light? You should start them at the bottom of your tank and work up every few weeks. If they are exposed to high light too quickly they will bleach.

Also check for redbugs. When I had them they went after my valida first.

prem are as follows as of yesterday.
Temp 78-80, pH 8.0-8.2, Salinity 1.024-1.027, ammo 0 nitritre 0 nitrate 0, Cl 460-500, Alk 7-9, Mag 1400-1500.
corals were acquired from several different sellers here on RC and most every one was over 2" and while plug covered. no pests and not a water issue i think and they were not wild either.
i think GILBY is right. i did acclimate then in water for temp but place them directly where i wanted them. so maybe placing them so close to MH (12" under water) maybe the problem. but rest all made it. i got a set of 30 frag and then week later another set of 15. all but purple color validas made it. kinda fishy.
i use redsea coral pro salt.

His levels are no different then mine and my valida is doing awesome

samething happened to me when i started vodka dosing with mb7.all my purple valida.went it started receding from the bottom.

also guys this is not happening to all other acros just purple. and its not over time its right away. frags arrive fresh and nice but soon as they hit my tank their skins starts to peel and shed and by 3-6 hrs they are bleached white.

Sure sounds like a water quality or parameter issue. That's a very rapid negative reaction on the part of the coral.

This happened to me with my purples when I was running close to ULNS with vodka dosing. When I stopped vodka dosing and running gfo they seemed to rebound and colored up. I think purples appreciate a little more junk in the water unless you have a way in ULNS to feed your corals like Zeovit. I haven't changed lighting or anything else. I'm not saying load the tank up with nutrients, but to simply not strip nutrients as fast as they're introduced.

Alex it makes sense. my paramaeter are on the perfect side when it comes to nitrogen cycle. Ammo 0 Nit 0 Nitr 0 and phos 0. i have heard some corals and clams need a little nitrates and phos to grow. i am running a system that is near perfect with sulphur denitrator and phos reactors and several ways of filterations.
if it was solely a bad water quality issue like some stated it would effect entire coral population not just one kind/color. rest of the tank is growing at amazing rate.
i have come to 2 conclusions unless more come up here.
1. light acclimation was not done.
2 ULNS

keep um coming guys need more input.

I'm guessing lighting is the culprit. I find my purple acro frags I have to slowly light acclimate versus other colors like green/yellow
