Comparing notes and habits

Here is a fairly recent picture with the canopy open-
canopyopen.jpg

How often do you change water and what % of the total system?
Every 2 weeks about 50 gallons (about 10% of total water volume)

What salt do you use and why?
I've used Reefcrystals since the tank was setup but I started switching to Tropic Marin Pro Reef. I liked the Reefcrystals but decided to change since I don't have to supplement as much with TM

What type of carbon do you use and why?
I've used bulk carbon as well as Two little fishies- no real reason why on either- haven't seen any PO4 problems.

Do you use a PO4 removing media? Why and how much? I use Phosban- basically because I have the reactor setup and figure it can't hurt. I only have about 1" of media in the reactor and change it every month.

How often do you feed and why/what?
Twice a day but small amounts. About 3pm I feed Dianichi pellets. About 8pm I feed a homemade food as well as some PE mysis soaked in garlic.

How often do you clean your glass?
Run the magnet over it about 2 times a week and scrape about every 2 weeks.

How often do you clean the skimmer cup?
Every 4 or 5 days for the cup itself. I usually take the whole skimmer apart and clean the becketts and main chamber about once a month.

Do you dose anything else?
Mag flake and Calcium chloride when needed. I also run ozone at 200mgph.

What type of Ca reactor media do you use?
ARM media- seems to work fine so far and it's a lot cheaper than the rest.

Do you buy most of your supplies online or locally?
Mostly online but I throw the LFS a bone every now and then. I try to support them when I can and if there price isn't that much higher I'll get it from the LFS.

If you are bare-bottom, how often do you vacuum the bottom?
I have about a 3" sandbed of Southdown and aragonite.

Do you clean your equipment and plumbing? How often?
Never cleaned the plumbing- I think I have about 400' of it and that would take forever! I do clean the equipment and support tanks every few weeks- no set schedule just when they look like they need it and I find the time.

How do you replace Ca/ALK?
Calcium reactor- prior to that I used Randy two part and still add a little Calcium chloride or baking soda if needed.

Hey,
My routine on all my tanks past/present:

How often do you change water and what % of the total system?
~20% fortnightly

What salt do you use and why?
Natural Seawater, always.

What type of carbon do you use and why?
Generic activated charcoal from a local chemical company, used in gold production.

Do you use a PO4 removing media? Why and how much?
Used phosban once, never needed it though.

How often do you feed and why/what?
On average 1-2 times daily.
Nori, spirulina, brine, bloodworm, mysis, flake all soaked in Kent Zoe and liquid garlic.

How often do you clean your glass?
About once every 2 days I use the magnet. About once per month I scrape any extra coralline.

What salt do you use and why? Reef Crystals used it from the start and haven't changed it is all
What type of carbon do you use and why? Kent Carbon changed every 6 to eight weeks. I like the pelletized carbon
Do you use a PO4 removing media? Rowaphos. Use a 1000 ml can every couple of months

How often do you feed and why/what? feed everyday and a lot at that.
How often do you clean your glass? About once per week I pass the magnet. About once per month I scrape any extra coralline.

How often do you clean the skimmer cup? From every week to every couple of weeks

225 gallon "mixed reef"

How often do you change water and what % of the total system? roughly 20% weekly. IMO water changes and good skimming will have a very large impact on the results you can achieve with any reef aquarium.

What salt do you use and why? I usually use IO. Sometimes Oceanic. Rarely RC. It depends on price and availability.

What type of carbon do you use and why? I prefer Matrix carbon. I also use other brands. The most important thing is to use granular activated carbon (GAC) and change it out regularly. I replace mine at least once a month.

Do you use a PO4 removing media? Why and how much? I've used PO4 removers in the past- mostly when cleaning up old sandbeds. If I use Rowa I use way less than the recommended dosage.

How often do you feed and why/what? Daily feedings. Sometimes multiple feedings. It really depends on if something looks like it needs more food. I use frozen broccoli florets, Cyclopeeze, frozen HUFA enriched mysids and artemia, nori, Oceanic flakes, etc.
I avoid the el cheapo flakes.

How often do you clean your glass? I'm obsessed. I probably swipe the glass at least every other day.

How often do you clean the skimmer cup? at least once a month

Do you dose anything else? I haven't dosed anything for several years now. I concern myself mainly with Ca and alkalinity levels.

What type of Ca reactor media do you use? I use ARM

Do you buy most of your supplies online or locally? locally. Except magnets and halide lamps. LFS's usually only carry smaller magnets.

If you are barebottom, how often do you vaccum the bottom? I sucked out the old DSB. Now I'm semi bare.

Do you clean your equipment and plumbing? How often? Man, I try to keep everything I own clean. It's a never ending battle!

How do you replace Ca/ALK? Calcium reactor and kalkwasser. Sometimes B-ionic. Sometimes (rarely) I use baking soda or Turbo Calcium to balance values.

daywn,

Thanks. Once I get rid of some of these frags, I'll have it cleaned up and I figure in about 6 months it should be filled in. It's tough to get a good representation of the tank in 1 shot since it is long.

On another note, great thread here. It's nice seeing other peoples ideas and methods on tank maitenance.

This is not an "absolute" answer. I am often changing my husbandry practices to try different things. But this is what everything averages out to:

How often do you change water and what % of the total system?
5% weekly or 10% bi-weekly

What salt do you use and why?
RC because it is made by the same people as IO whom have put out a tried and true consist product for many years that even the largest public aquariums use. If they trust the company so do I. I like RC over IO because I don't have to bump up the Ca, alk, or mg before doing the water change.

What type of carbon do you use and why?
Currently use ESV because it is cheap. I will soon be changing to Jacobi Aquasorb 2000.

Do you use a PO4 removing media? Why and how much? Sometimes. I use Phosban. I've used Rowa in the past and they both perform equally. Most of the time I don't use any.

How often do you feed and why/what?
I feed my own frozen mixture of seafoods, cyclop-eze, golden pearls, decapsulated brine shrimp eggs, phyto, flake food, pellet food, and selcon. I feed a about 1-2 teaspoons of this 2-3x daily. I also feed 1 sheet of nori daily for my tangs.

How often do you clean your glass?
Bi-weekly. Monthly I scrape the coralline.

How often do you clean the skimmer cup?
I wipe down the riser tube every 1-2 weeks and remove the entire cup for a thorough cleaning every 1-2 months.

Do you dose anything else?
Sometimes I "experiment" with different things but for the most part, my system does just fine on water changes alone.

What type of Ca reactor media do you use?
ARM

Do you buy most of your supplies online or locally?
I used to get everything (dry and live) online. But there is a new LFS in my area that price matches what I pay online + shipping so I now throw my support towards him.

If you are barebottom, how often do you vaccum the bottom?
My tank doesn't collect detritus on the bottom very much. I have to siphon a small pile every 2-3 months. I do have to siphon my sump every 1-2 weeks. On that note, I have had thoughts about going back to a SSB or possibly even a plenum or DSB.

Do you clean your equipment and plumbing? How often?
I would like to do it every 6 months but in reality it only gets done yearly. I remove the wet ends of all of my pumps and soak the assemblies and impelleres in vinegar for 4 hours and then brush them off under water. I als completely clean the pump housings with RO water and a wash cloth.

How do you replace Ca/ALK?
Just a good ol' Ca reactor.

Re: Comparing notes and habits

Hi all,
interesing to see, here is mine:

How often do you change water and what % of the total system?
I change 7% a week (thought about 5-10% but 7 was just one rainbarrel full)

What salt do you use and why?
TropicMarin (not pro reef), best colours with this one, using it for years.
Good with Hardness, a little short on Ca and Mg but I am adding that anyway.

What type of carbon do you use and why?
GroTech ActiveCarbon about a pound each month for 3 days in 870gal.
It's known for having very low PO4 in it (some brands have lots I was told).

Do you use a PO4 removing media? Why and how much?
Checking PO4 with Merck/Deltec Test every other week.
If > 0.045 ppm I use about a pound RowaPhos in a flowbed with slow flow. Changing if PO4 raises again, or after about 2 months if PO4 not detectable. (Surface biologically locked (inactive)).

How often do you feed and why/what?
3 times a day frozen mysis/artemia/mysis, 2 times flakes with autofeeder.
Having Pseudanthias dispar in tank thats important.
Corals with Phyto/Zoo replacement from FaunaMarin/TropicMarin, Aminoacids.
Beeing very low on NO3 PO4 corals need to be fed.

How often do you clean your glass?
Twice a week frontglass once a week back, with magnet.

How often do you clean the skimmer cup?
Every week on my tankcleaning day.

Do you dose anything else?
Strontium/Barium solution as growpusher, PVP-Iodine for colour and softcoralgrowth,
Traceelement mix from QFI for corals

What type of Ca reactor media do you use?
Using no Ca reactor, dosing MgCl2, CaCl2 and NaHCO3 Pharm. grade and NaCl-free Saltwater
in a modificated "Balling"-Method, (Like 2-Part method?)

Do you buy most of your supplies online or locally?
Most is bougt online, not many shops around, large amount not to be bought in shops.
Last salt batch was 800 kg (about 1750 pound).

If you are barebottom, how often do you vaccum the bottom?
Sandbed, critters keep clean

Do you clean your equipment and plumbing? How often?
Sump, Pumps every 6 months, having Red Dragon with anti-chalk modification.
Ripping algae from algaefilter once a month.

Replace of Ca/Alk./Mg
See Ca-Medium, adding chemicals with "Balling"-method, something like 2-Part-method?

Best, Ralf

When they stop working. :) Occasionally I'll be proactive and clean out the pumps annually.

How do you replace Ca/ALK?

Deltec PF600S CA reactor with twin tubes. Replace all evaporated water (8 gallons per day) with kalkwasser,

Greg

Forgive me if this sounds like a dumb question. For those of you that are feeding multiple times per day, how are you doing it? I know you can buy automatic feeders for pellets and flakes but how are you feeding frozen food multiple times per day? Dont you have to go to work?

I live on the second floor where I work, my 90 is in my apt, and there is a 180 downstairs in the funeral home. So i just fill up a container with a lot of food, and feed over the course of the day, up and down the stairs. I need the exercise.

I generally try to go into work as little as possible. :D

Seriously, though. I have my lights set to come on about 1/2 hour before I typically leave in the morning. That gives me an opportunity to feed before I walk out the door. When I get home, the lights are still on, so it's not a problem to feed twice, even with work. It helps that I don't have any real commute, and I try to work from home whenever practical.

I use two feeders that feed pellets a combined four times daily. I feed frozen foods, freeze dried cyclopeeze, and flake foods once or twice in the evening and as desired on the weekends. Sometimes they get fed 8-10 times per day on the weekends. I could feed in the morning, but that seems pointless since my lights don't turn on until 4PM.

Sorry to stay off topic.

I have my lights on a late schedule, so I typically feed at 6, 8, and 10 PM. On the weekends, I start feeding at 3:00 PM and then maybe feed again at 6 and 10 PM.

Greg
