Comparing notes and habits

225g Tank ( ~ 300g Water Volume)
Tank05-066.jpg

How often do you change water and what % of the total system?
50g Water change bi-monthly (18%)

What salt do you use and why? I use IO. Never had a problem with it.

What type of carbon do you use and why? No brand name. Came from a group buy a while ago. I only run carbon for 5 days after a waterchange

Do you use a PO4 removing media? Why and how much? I run about 300 ml of Rowaphos and change it out every 2 months or when I see signs of PO4.

How often do you feed and why/what? I feed every with PE mysis, formula I ,II and half a sheet of nori.

How often do you clean your glass? About every other day.

How often do you clean the skimmer cup? About every 3 days.

Do you dose anything else? Just ESV Kalk from my Kalk Reactor

What type of Ca reactor media do you use? Using the Schuran media in my H&S Ca Reactor (what it is design for)

Do you buy most of your supplies online or locally? Little of both

If you are barebottom, how often do you vaccum the bottom? Every 2 weeks before a water change. Just have a few small pockets.

Do you clean your equipment and plumbing? How often? I clean my Kalk Reacter every 2 months, pumps every 6 months, sump every time I do a water change, etc...

How do you replace Ca/ALK? H&S Ca Reactor and Reefmania Kalk Reactor

I like your tank. Being a wood freak as well as a reef geek, I have to ask; what kind of wood is that stand? It's not cherry is it? You can tell by the pattern that it's a peel, but it's really georgous.

By the way Doc, I can see that there are still a fair number of responses coming in, but when do you plan to compile and present all this data?

Thanks..

The stand is made of birch plywood. I don't understand what you mean by "peel"?

Peel - Visualize a log on a spit being cut from the side in a spiral toward the center of the log so you end up with a very long single sheet. This is the most efficient way to cut wood for making plywood or veneer.

Again, it looks very nice.

Oh.. I see.. Thanks for clearing that up.

That is awesome guys. If enough replies come in, I will do some number crunching in what % does this or that, but I would like to have at least 50+ responses before doing that. I think it will provide a great deal of info for people with larger systems as to what is working very well for others.

From page 1:D  :D

I quit work so I could feed my fish more often!
I work at home. :)

Bump since it has been a month or so. Please limit the responses to answering the questions to make it easier to follow.

Update on my system:

I am now using a DIY Multi-Media reactor you can view in this thread.

I am using Schuran media and maintaining pH of 6.20 in the Ca portion of this reactor.

I am very pleased with how this project has turned out and I think this unit would be of great use in a smaller size for those reefers limited to under their tank for equipment space. I still have to make a couple of baskets and possibly employ a clamping system rather than the many SS bolts I am using but I am cheating a bit by using a cordless drill and hex socket! :)

my new aquarium is one year old (seen in this pic) but my methods remain the same. Bumping for more input from experienced reefkeepers...

My tank is about 8 months old.

How often do you change water and what % of the total system?
I do a weekly 50g water changes which is about 10% of the 450 gallon display.

What salt do you use and why?
I currently use Reef Crystals. I was using Tropic Marin Pro-Reef but I did not notice enough of a benefit for the cost.

What type of carbon do you use and why?
none

Do you use a PO4 removing media? Why and how much?
I use ROWAphos 1000 mL and I am not sure how often I change it. Whenever I notice phosphates again.

How often do you feed and why/what?
I feed relatively heavy. Automatic feeder 2 or 3 times daily of Formula One & Two Marine pellets and Marine Formula by New Life maybe 1/2 teaspoon. I also feed frozen food once daily of Formula Two, Angel Formula, Krill, and mysis shrimp.

How often do you clean your glass?
About once a week, I use a plastic scraper and magnet.

How often do you clean the skimmer cup?
Twice a week.

Do you dose anything else?
I occasionally add ESV B-Ionic buffer.

What type of Ca reactor media do you use?
None but I will be adding one soon, but I haven’t decided on one yet.

Do you buy most of your supplies online or locally?
I buy almost exclusively from Something Fish (LFS). If they can’t get it then I check That Pet Place and Marine Depot.

If you are barebottom, how often do you vaccum the bottom?
Nope, I have a deep sand bed.

Do you clean your equipment and plumbing? How often?
I clean the perforated tubing for the closed loop about every two weeks. I also clean the Tunze pumps and the overflow teeth about every month.

How do you replace Ca/ALK?
Just with water changes.

How often do you calibrate your controller/monitor probes?
No schedule. I really need to start doing that regularly.

Great to see the thread resurected and going again. Thanks Gary. I wished we had more people continue to put in data as it only benefits every single one of us. Not enough numbers yet to bother to add anything and calculate trends, but I will do it once we get enough entries.
