computer battery back up for black out?

that may be nice to have but a battery air pump may still be better since you can go buy more battery but if that thing runs out of joice your screwed. Its also too bulky fo rme, I dont have enough room as it is.

I remember seeing a DIY post of adding extra deep cycle car batteries to the UPS. Yes it takes up more space but allows for deeper reserve for longer blackouts. Anybody tried this and has suggestions?

Was in the battery bizz for many years. Batteries are not cheap anymore, plus you would need to use AGMs.
Then there is recharging the batteries back up, if not done right, there junk.
A generator is going to be your best deal both for short and long term usage.

Unfortunately, generators are not an option for apartments. Just need to find the right match of UPS and battery as the UPS will keep the battery charged.

Most ups systems are going to have 17/18 Ah batteries in them.
2 to 4 batteries. There charging system and the rate at which they charge at are marginal at best.
Pick a setup thats going to work for base on run time.

I would think circulation would be more important thn heat this time of year. APC has a 1500VA battery back up I just picked up on sale at Compua for $150.00 after rebates. You can get can get an add on battery pack for $125.00 that will tripple the amount of time it will run what ever you decide to run on it. I have my 156watt 3000GPH return pump on it and it will run for over 30 mins without the spare battery pack. http://www.gopossolution.com/proddetail.asp?prod=BR24BP
It should keep your heater going for a long time. Once I finnish up my new sump I will just hook up a sieo 1100 or 1500 up to the UPS instead and it should run that for a day at 8-10 watts. http://www.apc.com/products/runtime...fm?upsfamily=23

The problem with any Uninterruptible Power Supply is that it does not have GFCI. I have a nice UPS that could run my tanks pumps for awhile, but I can't hook it up since it will defeat my GFCI.

I suppose I could leave it plugged in somewhere in the house to keep the battery charged and then in the event of a power outage, move it to my tank and plug my pumps into it.

Why will the UPS defeat your GFI? Will the GFI not work if the UPS is pluged into it? Besides you only need to have one pump hooked up to the UPS.

Somebody mentioned what I think is a neat and somewhat unique solution in a power-out: hooked up a bubbler and air hose to a medical grade oxygen tank and just let 'er flow. No battery, no power, just the pressure within the tank.

The drawback is that you have to lug the thing upstairs.

All Delight That should run your nano a long time with just the pump. Also you might want to test it before you need it just to see that your pump works properly ans the UPSs are not really designed for pumps. I have smaller UPSs on all my nanos also. The power when out Tuesday a 6am here and every thing kept running. Now the noise of all the UPSs beeping is a different matter. I would not hook the chiller to it myself.

I just picked up a brand new mini portable oil generators 1200W (smaller than a 12g nano cube) at the computer swap meet on Edinger/Main. It can handle up to 5 hours for all my pumps and the price is only $100. I also can run longer if the oil will be filled up in the tank.

Good idea!! maybe hook it up to a normally closed solenoid so that when the power goes out it will open allowing air to bubble.

The problem with these is, they will only last a few hours max, and thats with a couple deep cycle marine batteries added on.

the battery air pumps are crap, the only real answer is a generator. you can get small portable ones fairly cheap.
or go with the o2 bottle or scuba tank.

I have both at home 02 bottle and generator. Btw, if someone needs these stuffs for emergency case (power outage), please let me know.

I have many spare medical pure O2 bottles at home for my MOM using incase emergency needed. Someone comes to my house refilling all bottles when we needed.

If anyone is looking for a 900 APC Battery Back UP the Office Depot on Jamboree west of the 405 in Irvine/Newport Beach has 4 of them on sale for $88.00.
