Ahhh, someone must not have been around to see Kareem hitting those unstoppable sky-hooks time after time after time in the crunch against the C's. Olajuwon with his nimble and unstoppable speed, agility and footwork going to the basket, not to mention his consistent outside shot and dependable free-throwing. There is no excuse for a professional who makes millions of dollars/year to make 30% of his FT's. How "clutch" can a player be down the stretch, especially in the playoffs, if he can't make a free-throw. That is called laziness. Hell, they coined a strategy in the NBA based on his weakness..."Hack-a-Shaq". Wow, what a "Best Center Ever" candidate...
I wasn't around in the Wilt the Stilt days...but I was around to see Kareem and Olajuwon. Now those were skilled centers. The only thing going for Shaq is his size. How much skill does it take to dunk the ball on a 10' rim when you are 7' + tall. Let me tell you: NOT MUCH. He leads every move to the basket with his elbows to the defender's chin. Don't tell me that it's because he's so big and they just naturally "land" on the defenders' chins. He purposely uses them to create space to get his weak 3-5 foot "shot-putt's" off or to clear space to the basket so he can dunk. He has singlehandedly changed the game of professional basketball for the worse by changing the way the game is officiated. I am, or say was, a huge NBA fan since growing up with the Lakers in the '80's. I was really pulling for the Spurs this year because love 'em or hate 'em, I believe they exemplify
a TEAM. Duncan can have an off-night and the others will pick it up. Parker and Ginobli are excellent penetrators and passers to open jump shooters. Bowen is an excellent defender and spot up 3 point shooter. Nowadays it's all show and one-on-one moves to the basket and dunks. Boring. Can't stand Kobe for that same reason. At this point I'd rather watch college ball anyday because it's about TEAMWORK, i.e. PASSING THE BALL, defense, rebounding, and setting picks.
It's also about passion for the game and undying school spirit...not jumping on the nearest bandwagon or "superstar".
March madness IS basketball or at least SHOULD be what basketball is all about.
Being a huge NBA fan since the late '70's, and player myself to this day, it is sad to see this sports progression go this way and it really hits a nerve.
Ahh, I long for the days of watching Magic, Big Game James, Coop, Scott, and the goofy lanky guy with the silly looking goggles. Showtime at the Forum, those were the days....
I'll step off my soapbox now...
