Cool Fish on Diver's Den

Hmmm. About how long do you think I could keep him in a 55 gal before I need a bigger tank? (I promise, I'm kidding. I really want one of these, but plan to wait until I have a 240 first.)

IMO/E they are slow growers...you'd have plenty of time for an upgrade

That's kind of a risky approach. Not that I haven't done it myself, but plans and circumstances can change and the upgrade may never happen or be seriously delayed.

Agreed. That's why I will wait until we move and have a 240gal system before getting a fish that would be happier in a big tank. It's a fish I really want, so I would rather have one I can keep for it's lifespan versus trading it out for a smaller one every time it gets to big for my system.

Either way, the fish sold within a couple of hours to someone who is not me.

I've had various H Tusks in my tanks since 1973... I can't remember any of them growing more that an inch, over many years!

I bought my Tusk about 2 years ago, and it was about 2". Now it's about 4". So certainly not fast, but not super slow either.

Mine is at 5-5.5" and has grown slightly... maybe. Others like my regal angel or Gem tang have noticeably gotten larger. Tangs and angels seem to grown quickly IME comparably speaking to other fish

Once the get to about 5-6 inches the really slow down. That is in a 420 gal and 320 gal with plenty of food

Question: would you rather pay DD prices or get more of a shoaling fish for the same money.

I ask the question because not only does the fish I am looking at cost almost double but I also can't cover the cost for free shipping :/

So, am i better off ordering the DD and getting hit for shipping. No, there isn't anything else that I want. I also don't have any experience for qt and this would be my first.

There is always something to add to get to the free shipping amount: shrimp, algae, live food...
Also it doesn't matter if the items come from DD, Quality Marine (= the regular LiveAquaria livestock), ORA or any of their other suppliers.

Well, I guess the question was about the risk in health of the fish. Or is the DD stuff the same as QM just with wysiwyg photos?

Fish from QM and even DD have to be assumed infected and a sick until proven otherwise, same as with all other fish or wet items you get anywhere else.

May not be the right place, but there is always a lot of talk and some fish experts here. Could anyone tell me what the fish is that is hosted in this picture? I just came back from a few dives in Hawaii and saw lots of them but do not know the name or if it is something reasonable to consider keeping (fish that is). The coral is pocillopora. Few searches are showing damsels but it didn't look like one. I thought it was a clown derivative but pretty sure I'm way wrong.

Thanks.
