Copperband Butterfly Primer

New Copperband

New Copperband

It took a week or so but after he ate all my feather dusters he finally started to eat frozen mysis and is eating with the other fish. I know he needs some variety so I will try to get some blackworms somewhere . Can you order them on line?

Thanks
Frank

store them in a tupper ware. I store them in the fridge since it helps them keep for much longer. I do add some water but I feel only enough water just to cover the worms is necessary. too much and the stock seems to spoil/foul. Rinse at least weekly with fresh water. and Feed heartily to your CCB :)

Ok so when they arrive remove them to a rubbermaid container after rinsing them off. Weekly rinse them and add just enough water to cover all the worms

Tanya,
I store them in plastic food storage containers. I think they are made by Ziploc, but I think some the grocery stores carry their own brand as well. I use the two quart size and split one pound of worms up into four of them. This means about a quarter to half an inch of worms on the bottom. Aquaticfoods also sells containers they call worm keepers, but I don't have any experience with these. I rinse with chilled RO daily after feeding the fish. I fill the container about half full with water, let the worms settle to the bottom and then pour the water off the top. Then I repeat this. It take two gallons of RO to do this for four containers. I leave as little as water as possible in the container pouring off as much as I can without pouring any worms down the drain. I then add a dropper of Selcon and a dropper of Garlic Guard and then store them back in a small fridge at 40 F. One pound lasts me a month and the worms stay alive that long with no problem. If the water in the container is too deep or gets fouled, the worms will die. I would definitely recommend rinsing every other day at least, especially if you're making additives like I am. Daily is better and that's what Aquaticfoods recommends on thier website.

Would a CBB survive in my 75gal FOWLR tank? It been established for over 5 yrs and I want something that will cleanup my apstasia. Haven't seen one at the LFS and don't trust the mail order type fish what so ever.

Thanks Pirate ;)

My sohal harassed mine bad until I added a mirror to the front of the tank. It keeps any aggresive fish to be attracted to the image of themselves overall. I left it there overnight and finally took it away when they ignored the mirror image of themselves. And I havent seen any aggression towards the CBB since.

I've noticed on LA that they offer, at times, CBBs from four locales: australia, singapore, indo pacific, and papa new guinea. All have tiered pricing. Does anyone know why Australia commands the highest price?

Here was LAs response (their response to my email was really quick I might add):

Thank you for your interest in Drs. Foster and Smith's LiveAquaria and the Copperband butterfly fish. The different pricing is simply due to the fact that we receive this fish from different regions and different collectors. Each collector has their own transit prices and fish coming from closer locations are normally less expensive. This also helps us keep track of where the items are coming from. There are normally no differences in the Copperband butterfly fish as far as coloration, temperment, and longevity in the home aquarium are concerned. Please let us know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

I pulled this off of marinecenter.com's website:

While this popular species can do well when their requirements are met, they are somewhat fragile the do not tolerate careless handling and require excellent water quality and exceptionally peaceful tankmates. With this in mind, you may want to consider another butterfly if you're squeamish about the possibility of losing a fish. Also note, small specimens are more delicate than medium or larger specimens. The Australian Copperband Butterfly tends to fare predictably better than those from other areas.

From what I've read the Australian imports appear to do better, hence, the higher price on LAs tiered pricing.

When I googled CBB, Melevs .wav file came up as a search hit. I wonder if we could get him to add his experiences with this fish on here........either it didn't make it, or he was QT for someone else, but I don't see it in his tank.

In the last podcast Evan mentioned that he and marc had both recently lost their copperbands. They didn't expand on what happened though.

I wanted to share what I use to feed my copperband. Its a simple PVC end cap and adapter to plug it off. I drilled some small holes in it for him to get to the food. The great thing is he is the only fish that can get to it.

Hope this helps out some of you with picky eaters.

Hella
