It would seem that my luck or should I say the Blue Face luck has run out. Until very recently he was well behaved but last weekend for whatever reason he has been going on a rampage so Mr. Wilson and I have agreed that tomorrow it is the sump for him until we can figure out what to do with him. Its too bad, as he is a magnificent specimen but he is doing I guess, what any respectable Blue Face will do in his place and that's eat everything that isn't nailed down!!!!

Peter

May I suggest the addition of another smaller tank added to the system just for angels or butterflies or any other fish you really like that have a taste for your corals?

How Much??????? You bought that fish with me and I was excited as a kid in a candy store when I saw that fish. My tank is already a prison for those who are not accepted by society. He will fit right in. You name your price, and I will be over with a ice fishing rod and a mini trebble hook and we will catch him without tearing the tank down.

On Friday, Mr. Wilson (speargun), Jamie (harpoon), Andrew (Bowie knife) and I (old fashioned electric toaster) will be looking to extricate the Blue Faced Angel. If you wish to join in you are welcome. I expect we will be discussing various strategies over a swiss chalet chicken (sushi was ruled out!!). Mr.Wilson has suggested your offer to house the criminal is perhaps the most humane alternative to the suggestions so far. Cost for a successfull outcome???...........Priceless. Cost of failure???????banishment by the members of this thread with no parole for 25 years!

The best way to remove the blueface without to much trouble is to trap him either in a clear acrylic appropriately sized trap baited with its favourite food or to herd him into an small area/corner of the aquarium that can be blocked off by eggcrate or something similar to prevent escape and then capture it.

My middle section of my aquarium is home to many different angels and i have found some corals are suitable with them but they are often not the colourful ones that we all love to keep, there are certain species of angels that will be less destructive and a Regal angel would definitely fit great in there, i have also found Asfurs a to be quite well behaved but it often comes down to individual fish.

The aquarium is coming together beautifully much praise to all involved!!

Hi Peter,

I have to say that your "backdoor fishroom" loocks better than some official stores in our region. It is great what you'd achieved.

And to think I was unhappy about staying home sick today!

Thanks for such a well documented journey.

Best of luck catching that magnificent blue face. There are too many different things I'd like to comment on after reading through this wild ride so I'll just settle in and try and hang on for what will undoubtedly be a remarkable growout.

Okay well maybe just two questions that I may have just not caught during the read through:

Do you have a master desired fish list or any specific species that are absolute 'must haves' that you don't already have in the tank? (any updates on that gem being delivered?...from the friend Romania I believe)

How many Barq's root beers have been emptied while staring at the tank? :) :)

Thanks again,
Dustin

The AquaNerd blog posted about "an unnamed fish store chose to ditch the lights they were originally using and upgraded to LED light fixtures for their marine section" and showed a picture of your fish room.
They do make an excellent point though...the lights look amazing. I can see how they would be confused.:lmao:

That may be one of the more funny things I have seen in a while.

Well after seeing the AquaNerd blog no need to ask what LED lights you all decided to go with LOL. Really enjoy this tread thanks Mike

there was a mistake in the information sent to the blog, but it has been corrected thanks to emails and comments from several people. i have pm'ed nineball with an apology and explanation for the confusion.

regardless, the lights and this build thread are simply amazing.

Does anyone know what eats blue face angels? :furious:

I have been falling behind on the thread this week. I don't know how you all keep up.

We liked the new Orphek LED lighting so much, we decided to add some to supplement the display tank. As Peter has stated, we will be running LED fixtures along both sides of the metal halide lights. This will give us the best of both worlds while shedding some light on the outer canyon walls. The tank is 3' wide and the canyon is almost 2.5' wide so lighting it has proven to be a challenge.

We will be angling the 24" x 6" 120 watt fixtures inward to keep the viewing panels free of algae and to minimize shadows and maximize photosynthesis and coral pigmentation. We tried out 4 fixtures and they look very nice. They don't look as eerie blue with the MHL in the background and it looks like we won't lose any maintenance access to the tank.

We have been going coral and fish shopping every friday so we should have some new additions tomorrow to fill the void left by the departing Blue Face Angel.

Hi Peter,

I am not quiete sure if you have mentioned this before, I'll follow this threat frequently but do not read each and every word :spin2:. My question is are you going to introduce all the animals you are keeping in the "backdoor" system to the display tank? If so what are you planing with this system once the display is full?

Regards Ralph

I have used eggcrate in the past with great success, you have to be patient like anything in this hobby. What I have done is make a piece of eggcrate that will block a corner of the tank, place it in the tank for a day or two in the corner with a small gap between the glass and eggcrate, until the culprit is comfortable with it in the tank. Then skip a feeding if required and then put food in the corner behind the eggcrate. When the bugger is in feeding just block him in. This is a two man operation (I use the Wife) one person holds the eggcrate in place and then other nets the pray.

I have found that a sheet of acrylic will not work for two reasons, first the water resistants makes it hard to move quickly as you have to block them fast, two the fish will feel the water movement and run !!!

Good luck and happy fishing

Any luck getting Blue face out of the tank?cant imagine how hard that would be in your tank, its hard enough chasing them around small tanks..

As John Walsh from America's most Wanted would say, the people of America can sleep better knowing that there is one less scumbag roaming our streets. The blue face angel with the street name "Rainbow" is safe behind bars in the sump.

After a valiant effort from the brothers Grimm, Jamie & Andrew, the assailant was apprehended at the end of a net. He went away shirtless in cuffs swearing he would only reoffend. I'm sure he will come out a harder criminal, and with a name like Rainbow he will surely be a punk fish:)

All kidding aside, the atmosphere in the tank is amazingly calm now, no more frantic darting and constant fear of corals getting picked at or knocked down. All cheer, the tyrant is gone. Chago offered to take the prisoner, but I saw Peter printing some Cajun blackened fish recipes.

Andrew netted him on the third try after we had him pinned down with an eggcrate wall at on end of the tank. I seriously thought we would have to drain the tank to get him.
