Cryptocaryon Irritans - tank transfer method

Ok thanks Spar that's what I wanted to confirm, I have a 55 for QT but was using a pair of 20 longs for the TT itself. So on day 13 I will actually move everyone over to the QT.

correct, Day 13 move them over to the 55g. Start treating with PraziPro at that point if haven't already.

I have not, I am running everything from the DT through the TT now due to ending up with ICH in my DT. I was still debating whether I should run Prazi or not while they are in the QT waiting for my fallow period to end. Is there any downside at all to running Prazi if they don't have any issues other than ICH?

No issues. I do it preemptively for all fish.

Prazi is extremely easy on fish. Will help with Flukes if you happened to have some in your DT before. Your call; since you are treating fish that have been in your DT for a while, you likely would have noticed Flukes impact by now. But, would give you some greater confidence that you are starting your "new" DT off knowing you are fluke-free.

No, I don't have any ich in my dt. All ich has been in qt which was washed w/bleach and dried between occupants

A few questions....

I started TTM on Wednesday afternoon @ 2PM EST which was when I moved a wrasse and a chromis from normal QT to a 5G bucket. They were in the QT from Sunday @ ~5PM until Wednesday. Does that move to the bucket count as my first transfer or? When should my next transfer be? Saturday before 2PM I assume?

When I finish TTM I plan on giving them a week or two in the normal QT tank (10G tank) to recover etc, and would it be a bad idea to treat them in the QT with Prazipro before I put them in the DT just in case? I also have API General Cure if that would be needed too. (Note: They haven't exhibited any illnesses thus far, I'm doing TTM on them because I got paranoid.)

For TTM should I use 2x 5G buckets, or would filling the normal 10G QT to the 5G mark be okay instead of a second 5G bucket? It has been bleached and rinsed thoroughly as well.

My most important question though, is what point in TTM am I at right now? Should I count Sunday as the start of it, or Wednesday?

Also, I use IO reef crystals in my DT, should I be using that in the QT and TTM as well, or would the cheaper IO Sea Salt work fine? (I am currently using Reef Crystals in QT and TTM)

Personally, I would consider Wednesday day #1, as the transfer was done in the afternoon. I wouldn't worry about which salt mix you were using where. I use a mix of RC and IO in the DT, but only IO in QT/TTM. Sorry for the acronyms...

count the day you put them in as Day #1 regardless of what time you added them in.

The 12-day rule is excessive technically, really you only need 9-10 days if you follow the life cycle. So by giving 12 days, you are putting a couple days buffer for a parasite that isn't obeying their life cycle expectations :) this is why the 4th transfer is considered a just-in-case transfer.

TTM and Mandarins

TTM and Mandarins

Steve,

1) Thank you very much for this thread, read the whole thing, and am currently TTM my first 2 clowns. Very exciting. First transfer was this morning.

2) How does one approach the TTM for a Mandarin, with their Pod only diet? I'm a long way off, but ultimately would like to get one, and would like to be prepared when the day comes.

Thanks in advance, ZB.

Most people feed nutramar ova during QT of Mandarin's. They seem to accept it.

So should I transfer tonight or in the morning tomorrow? Both are within 72 hrs of the transfer Wednesday, but Wednesday's was not within 72hrs of getting them on Sunday. So does Sunday - Wednesday not count?

(See post above for additional details)

I'd transfer in the morning to get back on track and then throw in an additional transfer at the end. Also, 2 rounds of Prazi while in the QT, after TT and prior to adding to DT is a sound plan. That's what I do.

FWIW, I keep fish in QT for a total of 12 weeks.
Week 1 - observe, get feeding, rest
Week 2 and 3 - TT
Week 4 - rest
Week 5 and 6 - Prazi
Week 7 through 12 - observe

So I should do tomorrow morning's transfer, and then one more on Tuesday correct? And then TTM should have had full effect?

It sounds like your Day 1 was Sunday when you first put the fish in QT. If so,

Day 1 - in to QT tank on June 8
Day 4 - 1st transfer in to 5 gallon bucket, June 11
Day 7 - 2nd transfer June 14 in am
Day 10 - 3rd transfer June 17 in am
Day 13 - 4th transfer June 20 in am

Again, if it was me, I would throw in an extra transfer due to your starting in the afternoon rather than early morning. But that's just being extra cautious.

Hope this helps!

I am curious about the sterilization between transfers. I read the recommendation from Snorvich on wiping down with a bleach solution and then let air dry for 24 hours.

Which is one is killing the cysts that may be present?

i fill the empty tank with water and a splash of bleach and then throw everything else in...heater, thermometer, pvc. i let it sit for a while then rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse. then i lay everything out in the sun for the rest of the day, bring it all in at night, spread it out and let it air dry till i'm ready to fill it for the next transfer.

i would imagine that ich cannot live in dry conditions so i make sure everything is bone dry before it's used again.
