Cryptocaryon Irritans - tank transfer method

Any reason why you don't do Prazi and TTM at the same time. Like killing two birds with one stone.....

I want extended exposure time. TT assumes the water is discarded; however you could re-dose each time your transfer. Your choice.

So, I transferred all of the fish to the new tank this morning (Day 4). It went prety well. I caught them with a clear glass, and then used my hand to drain the water out to minimize cross-contamination. I do wish I could move the fish without them flopping all over the place in the bottom of the empty cup. Oh well, didn't seem to phase them. I then let them slide out of the cup into the new tank.

I can't take credit for this, as I found the tip in another thread, but I have been using plastic colanders for tank transfer, and it has made it an absolute piece of cake. Three different sizes for catching different size fish, and it was under $6 at WalMart.

Thanks Nick - good idea! I've been using a glass which is working OK, but I'll have to try a small colander. Just did the 4th transfer this morning. Almost in the clear - then it's 7 weeks in a QT while the display goes fallow....ugh.

Those of you using this method in your QT procedures, is this done as the first step? As in, fish come out of the bag and go into the first TT tank and clock starts ticking for day 1?

That's correct. For example, here was my last TT schedule (received fish on 3/19):

<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:OfficeDocumentSettings> <o:AllowPNG/> </o:OfficeDocumentSettings> </xml><![endif]--> 3/19 (Day 1) - Put the fish in Tank A
3/21 (Day 3) - Get Tank B ready with NSW
3/22 (Day 4) - Transfer fish to Tank B, which is temp and salinity matched
3/23 (Day 5) - Empty, clean (with bleach), and dry Tank A and all equipment
3/24 (Day 6) - Get Tank A ready with NSW
3/25 (Day 7) - Transfer fish to Tank A, which has been cleaned, and is temp and salinity matched
3/26 (Day 8) - Empty, clean (with bleach), and dry Tank B and all equipment
3/27 (Day 9) - Get Tank B ready with NSW
3/28 (Day 10) - Transfer fish to Tank B, which is temp and salinity matched
3/29 (Day 11) - Empty, clean (with bleach), and dry Tank A and all equipment - put in storage
3/31 (Day 13) - Transfer fish to 29g QT - end of Tank Transfer!
3/31 (Day 13) - Empty, clean (with bleach), and dry Tank B and all equipment - put in storage

Transfers on days 4, 7, 10, and 13.

For new fish, I observe for 7 days to make sure they're eating and don't have any obvious problems that need treatment. If all is ok, I start TT on day 8.

Hello All,

Great thread! Tons of information.

After reading through this thread I realize that I have done something terribly wrong, and I would like your opinions on my next step.

First, I have been running a tank for several months now, and up to last week everything was cruising along.

I purchased a hippo tang and placed it into QT for 10 days, and seeing no symptoms and a happy eater, I moved it to the DT.

Fast forward a few weeks and here come the spots. The tank also has 4 clowns (none of which showing any signs of problems). The Hippo is still eating like a pig.

Now, I had already ordered a blonde Naso, so when it came in it went into my small QT - here's where the horrible mistake comes in - I used a piece of LR from my sump to act at the bio filter in the QT. I know, I know - I have just ruined the QT.

Now, I will be embarking on the TTM in May, which is where my questions comes in - would it be better for the Naso to break down the small QT and move it to the DT since both tanks are likely infected? I have been sharing water buckets also - so double whammy!

I'm going to be overseas for two weeks starting on Monday and I'm worried that the stress of the small (10g) QT in addition to the risk of cross-contamination woudl be worse that placing him in the DT.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Paul

The problem with putting the Naso in the DT is that it might introduce something to the other fish that they don't have. Its a tough call.
No matter if you qt now or in May, your main display will have to be without fish for 10 weeks. Don't know how big are the fish, but having all those fish in a 10 gallon for that long might be a problem. Make sure you use an ammonia remover like Seachem Prime.
The problem with the 10 gallon tank is the dim. If you were to buy a 20 gallon tub from home depot or walmart and only fill it up with 10 gallons, than you should not have a problem. In the tub, the fish will have more room to swim as it is much wider/longer than a 10 gallon tank from a lfs.

By the way. If you do decide to buy a 20 gallon tub and your going to use it as a holding tank till the end of 10 weeks, do not keep the fish in there with only 10 gallons. Use the full 20 gallons.

Just adding a little feedback. I've been using TTM for a bonded pair of Helfrichi Firefish purchased from DD. They've been through a couple transfers now, and it's going very smoothly. They're eating within 5 minutes of being transferred. When executed correctly, this method seems minimally stressful even for shy fish like them!

On the morning of transfer, I've been draining the tank to about 1/4 full to make it easier to catch the fish. I figure easier on me, easier on the fish; since there will be less chasing around to do. My concern is I have been catching them near the bottom, and that's where any protomonts might be. So, could I be "stirring them up", and inadvertently transferring some into the new tank via my transfer vehicle? Or am I over thinking this and it's not a valid concern??

Transfers on days 4, 7, 10, and 13.

Looks like you are only doing 3 transfer. According to post 13 you are suppose to do 4. So you should be transfering the fish to you 29g QT on the 16th day.

?

I transfer on days 4, 7, 10, and 13, as shown on that schedule. If I went to the 16th, that'd be a 5th transfer (not necessary, but wouldn't hurt).

Anyone here ever TT a Moorish Idol? I'm thinking it shouldn't be a problem; but being they are considered "delicate" makes me second guess a little.
