I will let the cat out of the bag a bit early.... Keith is building a glass 14 gallon nano that will be raffled off at the Xmas party. It will be drilled and ready to go. OH YEAH.. I almost for got...did I mention it will be made out of STARFIRE GLASS :eek1:

I know exacty what I want to do with the one I recieved, but it will be a while before it is in use, which is a shame.
I have just about knocked out the design for my next tank. I really want to have a walk-in closet set up on a smaller scale as this: 4th picture down, do you see the light in the closet and the tank under it?

I think it would be cool to slam a 48" x 48" x 24" cube in the middle of a dinning room with it plumbed to the garage. That will be a big return pump I bet. Who wants to size it out by hand?

I coated the inside of my stand and canopy with three coats of marine grade paint. it's about $100 a gallon at West Marine. With all the warm moisture in the tank and sump, I felt it was well worth the money to get a quality product to protect my custom stand. I also made a drain basin out of the bottom as KMP stated earlier. Used 1x2 pine around the floor edges then siliconed all the corners and cracks. Then I drilled a drain thru the floor that's plumbed under the house to a curb drain. It's a precaution since there's alot of joints, seals and connections that can fail under there. Eventually...somethings gonna leak!

One more question that I should have asked before.....What about the inside of the canopy? Do you guys coat/paint that as well?

It would be a good idea to seal the canopy as well, so the moisture from the tank doesn't damage the wood.

I did not paint/seal any of my canopys on my old freshwater tanks, and each one of them had mildew on them at some point. I just built a canopy to house my 250w retrofit and will be sealing this time for sure. Probably my project for this weekend

After removing and repairing a fair amount of dry rot on a canopy for Bayareaaquarist 2 weekends ago, I would also strongly recommend sealing the canopy, ESPECIALLY where the canopy contacts the top of the tank, as water will wick up the end grain or through the MDF or plywood material.

Check out the minwax helmsman. It's used for outdoor applications with rain and uv rays. Sounds perfect for the canopy at least.
