d2mini's "Essential Focus" Mixed Reef Build

Why not go with a cole parmer/masterflex and lock in the stability? Also do you feel like this regulator will out perform a carbon doser regulator?

Everything looking good. I love GEO CaRx! Nothing like a good ol' American Made Product!

Good to hear you survived the hurricane in one piece.

Because they are huge, noisy and expensive. Fine in a fish room but under my stand in my living room, not so much.
I still have one from my last CaRx setup, but hadn't really had a need for it at that time. My little Rio feed pump was working fine. So I figure I'll see how it goes.
The AP carbon doser is a cheap single stage reg with a digital solenoid floating in a big empty plastic box.
For the same price, you get a dual stage reg that is just as easy to tune, uber stable, and will last forever.

Only bad thing about the Geo so far is the worthless mini ball valve on the effluent line. It's either off or fast drip and shot my Alk up already. I had to order a precision needle valve.

Haha damn I just ordered a 612 with the AP carbon doser last night, I've always heard good things about it...will it last me a while at least? This will be my first carx, I've always done 2 part in the past...

Yeah, it will be fine and its easy to use. I had one on my last setup before building a custom reg. I had no issues with the AP but thought it would be a fun project to build the custom dual.

I just think for the same price (or a bit more if you want to go all stainless steel), might as well go with the higher quality custom dual reg. The AP seems overpriced to me for what it is. But I guess you're paying for the ease of use.

Cool bud, thanks for all the advice.

Hi Dennis, I was looking at the GEO 612 while at this years MACNA. I pretty much had it with dosing 2 part, but before I pull the trigger for the GEO, I wanted to give the Tropic Marin Balling method a try. Well, this method looks like it will be more expensive than a GEO 612 in the long run. So, Dennis if you don't mind, firstly, who is Allan and secondly, is there a particular reason you choose not to purchase the regulator sold on the GEO website? And lastly, can anyone contact Allen and request a build like the one he made for you?. Thanks Dennis.

big and expensive yes but if you get a brushless they are dead silent. If you change your mind jump on ebay and look for medical supply companies that are taking offers and low ball them. I got a brushless unit with head for $240.

One day Ill have to build a dual stage and see how I like it. Been on the carbon doser for a while now and have no complaints so its hard to justify.

Ya, i'm always lucky if I can find a brushed version for that price.
But regardless, i'd really have a hard time squeezing that bad boy into my stand.

New FTS!
I'll take a couple other close shots soon, too. :)

Thanks! :)

Thought ya'll might like to see where my clowns sleep.
This is just a cell phone pic this morning before the tank lights came on.
The Percula and the open brain coral used to be in my nano tank and the Perc always slept there. This used to bother the brain (which I've had for about 6 years now, and at one point lost 90% of it's tissue about 3-4 years ago due to an annoying yellow bellied blue tang) but eventually it got used to the clown and no longer closes up at all when he starts swimming in and out. The Davinci clown had been in this tank for several months, when one day I moved the Perc and Brain from my nano to this tank. The Perc continued to "host" the brain, and it didn't tank long for the much younger Davinci to follow suit.

So I quickly found out that the little ball valve that comes with the Geo is impossible to fine tune. It's basically worthless as far as regulating flow out of the effluent line.
So now I have a nice new needle valve that works great. :)

That must have been what Nona was trying to tell me.
She's pointing her nose right at it. ;)

Here's the new valve...

I'm glad I saw your post regarding this, shortly after ordering my 612 the other night, I added on the needle valve as well. Thanks!
