d2mini's "Essential Focus" Mixed Reef Build

I think you guys are correct.
The LFS where I got some of the chaeto from said there was some other macro mixed in.
That's probably where it came from.
Live-Plants, where I got the other macros from, sells it for $8 so I guess I saved myself $8. :D

So since ya'll were wondering about my P04, i figured I'd finally check it.
I have the Hanna ULR phosphorous checker... it was flashing 200, which means it's at least .61. LOL! :D
And just so you can't blame the checker... I double checked it with the Red Sea Pro test kit.
Came back with the same result.

So there ya go! :)

Hi Dennis, been following your build. Really brilliant documentation. Respect. I have a question regarding your Triton decision, what made you go with the Triton method? How easy or hard is it to follow?

wow that's surprisingly high considering the source of your live rock.
It's not the rock.
Most likely it's all the phytofeast.
I should probably back off a bit. ;)

Thanks. :)
I went with Triton because it's based around natural filtration methods and systematically replacing all major and minor trace elements rather than just the big three and without having to rely on random water changes as an attempt to do so.
It's no harder than dosing two part.

All phyto ever did for me was raise po4 and made me clean the glass more.

The tank looks fabulous Dennis!!!

Actually, my glass has stayed pretty clean. No different than previous tanks. I always need to clean the dusty brown/green stuff off the glass every 2-3 days. Basically once I notice it.
This coming week will be one month since the rock went in and so far all sponges are doing great.
Gorgonians are visibly healing on a daily basis.
And as far as I can tell, even the tunicates seem to be hanging in there.

So i'm torn between keeping all that stuff alive vs whatever long term effects the high p04 could have.
If it was .15 or something like that, normally considered pretty high, I wouldn't be worried about it. But .6 does seem like it might be a tad excessive. lol
So far all coral, even the few sps frags are staying colorful and healthy looking.
But I don't want to end up with a bunch of p04 locked up in my rock and cause problems later.

Those must be some BIG flatworms!!! :eek1: [emoji38]

So just to update from the past week or so...

I'm now up to 7 fish.
In order of addition...
1 Seaweed Blenny
1 Royal Gramma
1 Juvi Wyoming White Clownfish
1 Powder Brown Tang
3 Springeri Damselfish

Feeding is up but Nitrates continue to fall and are down to about 10 ppm.
Food for the fish has been exclusively Larry's Reef Frenzy.
Food for the rest of the tank has been a daily dose of Reef Nutrition's PhytoFeast and some Oyster Feast mixed in with the fish food.
Occasionally some Reef Chili.
I have not checked P04 yet. Honestly I'm not all that interested in it.
The PB Tang pics on the rocks all day long. I haven't seen him eat Reef Frenzy or Nori yet, other than a quick pick at it. He ate fine in the store, so whatever algae is on the rocks is fine with him so it's fine with me.

I've also started dosing.
Started with 13ml per day of each of the Triton Base Elements, except for 3A which is the Magnesium.
Waiting for my Mag to drop to acceptable levels.

Speaking of algae... the Mars Hydro has been running 8 hours per night for the past two weeks.
The display drains directly into the fuge per the Triton Method and I've got some funky stuff growing already. The chaeto is already triple it's original size at least.
I also tossed in a couple clumps of the Mermaid Sea Fan macros that TBS sent, just to see how they would do down there.
But check out the growth of the mystery algae/macros on the floor and the red baffle.
I also have a few other macros coming in from Live-Plants.com later this week.

The corals I have in the tank also seem to be doing fine so far.
The edges of my big Turbinaria cup coral took a little beating on the way home in the bucket but those have healed.
The blue plate coral I transferred back in from the office nano hasn't skipped a beat.
My new open brain seems to be doing fine, as well as the frags that were gifted to me like the rainbow acan, JF Jackolantern, a plating monti, and encrusting monti, and a few chalices.
I also took a frag of my purple stylo from the office nano.
Too quick to see growth yet, but all colors and PE look good so far.

All in all, everything seems to be running well and staying pretty stable.
Hard to believe the TBS rock and sand all went in just 25 days ago.
Not even a month! :)
Looks great Dennis.. I did my move last week and have hooked mine back up also.. I'm getting some funky stuff this time so far myself I have been thinking about trying the vispar unit I have sitting by, just to compare it to the Mars. And also, because it has optics on it. So it should technically be more intense(not that is really needed..

I haven't seen a ton of cheato growth as of yet, but I'm sure it's coming.. However, yours is looking awesome! Keep us updated! I'm interested like the others for sure!

You can still feed heavy, and appropriate foods for your livestock and export the po4. This is a very informative thread, in case you haven't read it.

I too would be concerned about the long term effects of the high po4. You can feed heavily more easily than most because of the life you started out with, it expects plenty of food.

UPDATE 4-15-16

Moving right along... the equipment board is done and the sump is in!

Some of the plumbing is still dry fit as I wait for a couple fittings to arrive this week.

And some minor things to do like install the dosing lines, label the bottles, install my probes, put the Avast Spyglass in the return section of the sump... all in due time.

Now to head back outside and run those water supply lines from the mixing station on the back deck! :)

Are you happy with your life reef skimmer? I saw another member on RC posting about his, so I did a bit of research on them. Seems like they work great, but I found a video of a guy that was complaining about noise. He was running a Vectra as the skimmer pump, and he was saying the sucking noise was extremely loud. Wondering is that just normal with those types of skimmers? The guy said he has since moved the skimmer to his basement, so the noise doesn't bother him. But he said it's still noisy.

Does the noise bother you at all?

Love my lifereef. I started the LifeReef Skimmer Club thread in the equipment forum.
The only noise mine makes is the bubbles in the body of the skimmer.

SchnitzelReef if you check out the lifereef skimmer club I believe that person is something like PR Dubois (sp) and fixed the noise issue and is happy with it now. I might have the wrong person but he also had an air draw noise issue but worked it out.

Ok. I'll check it out. Thanks

Dennis, unrelated question to your current set up. Since you had gotten the ATI T5 light before going LED, wanted to ask if you had also looked into the Giesmann Matrix II?

I hear of pros and cons on both units, but am planning a build and am undecided on those two. Figured you must have done some researching on your end before getting the ATI...
Any help would be appreciated!

Nope, wasn't interested in t5 only.
And geisemann's combo fixtures only had 4 t5 bulbs. I needed 8.
