*d2mini's new 200g Reeftastic Build*

Ya know what sucks?
Walking out into the garage Monday morning about to leave for work and finding a trail of water coming out of your fish room and out the garage door.

All drains and everything seemed dry, but there is/was water all under the sump and around the sides of it. Then found the bulkhead on the front panel that brings water in from the refugium was dripping. WTH? Flange/Gasket is on the outside. Reached in and tightened the nut as best I could. Seems to have stopped, at least for now.

So water was dripping down onto the stand and rubber mat that sits under the sump.
What I'm wondering is if all that water could have been pulled back under the sump and then out the sides, 70" across? This bulkhead is pretty much dead center. The only other thing that could be leaking, and cause the water to get under the sump like that is the rear facing bulkhead where water enters the fuge. When I first installed it I had a drip and was able to tighten it and stop it. The problem is I can't really get my hand back there. Seems dry as far as I can tell but can't tell 100%. So for now I cut the flow to the fuge so things can start to dry out. If the drip from the front bulkhead remains gone, then I can turn the fuge flow back on and see if I end up with more water loss. I probably have standing water sitting behind the sump to, but again its a bear to reach back there. Just a few inches of space between the sump and the wall.

Once again, so glad this is all in the garage. :fun5:

Eep! Good luck and hope you nail down the source.

This kind of thing is why I wanted full access to all of my pumping after the tank was up and running.

Ya, i have full access to all plumbing.
That one bulkhead is on the very top of the rear panel of the fuge and I didn't know it was going to be there. The side or top would have been better.
But I also maximized sump size, so space is tight behind.

I thought you would normally put the gasket end of a bulkhead on the inside of the tank, no?
Yep. You want the water pressure to assist with creating the seal on the gasket. If the gasket is on the outside then the water pressure pushes the gasket off of the tank rather than onto which will be prone to leaks

Ya, it can be done, but it does have to be tighter.
What I need is super short bulkheads because I can't have them sticking out too far.
I know glass holes sells some. I got a few for my bean drains.

Actually, I believe that the gasket goes against the flange, regardless of whether it is wet or dry. You don't want it against the nut.

+1

If it's against the nut it will slide around as you turn the nut. You'll go nutty trying to get it water tight! Also the water will travel along the nut threads and leak.

Actually, I never said to have it against the nut. [emoji6]

I believe the gasket should always be on the wet side... over tightening is not good and is necessary when on the dry side.

Know quite a few people that have had leaks due to salt creep from over tightening a gasket on the dry side... I've never had creep when tightened properly on the wet side.

I do not like creeps. They creep me out.

Great thread,

I read a lot of it and it really helped me with my recent 300 build I posted on here... Your original "fish room" gave me a lot of ideas and upgrades for the future!
Thanks,
JIM

Dennis, I am exhausted...I finally finished reading the entire thread:lol:. That was amazing. I'll reply properly, after I have gotten some sleep. ;)
