Daniel's RSM 250 SPS tank

Update continues :

The tank has been stable for,a full month now at 8 dkh. I Hanoi measured the P & N this week. I will try today.

Here are some closer pictures of the 2 NEW TEST SPS.. :)

I hope they keep the pink color.... let see.

Bottom line, the tank looks stable again, I am using AF ProBio S , half dose, every day to keep Bacterias in good shape. I had a little ciano in the fuge that is slowly dissappearing. Started again with my normal feeding schedule. Later I will measure N and P. But as I always say..... it is what it is in my life style. I am trying to do the best that i can for these guys.

Cheers all
Daniel
Good luck Daniel, those test SPS are pretty nice even if that wasnt their purpose. I used to grab green SPS for that purpose but no more green!!

Good luck Daniel!
After reading the discussions in Matt's thread, would you consider dosing some Micro E?

Thank you Matt, Mark and Matt for your positive energy. I have faith that the tank is going again smothly. Now is a question of time. LET SEE !!!!

OK..... some data.

Salinity 1027
Alk 8 dkh..... yesterday night ( ~10 PM when I normally measure it)
PO4 0.03 by Salifert. ... 0.16 by Hanna ????
NO3. 10 ppm Salifert

Nitrates are a little high, could be as part of the lost of equilibrium in the tank. Let see if Matrix with their bacterial colony do the job as before. I am also seeding every day half dose of ProBio S.

I belive I will trash the hanna checkers, for Alk and P04.

The Alk is always 1- 0.5 dkh lower than Salifert. Yes, Hanna, sent me the correct batches, I had 2 bottles of the bad batch. The PO4 is some how variable with Hanna.

I belive I will order the Milwaukee PO4 equipment. I measured twice the P04 with the salifert and same results.

What do you think guys: Continue with the Salifert or buy the Milwaukee ?

Cheers
Daniel

Just taken........

Just taken........

No

It is something that will be difficult for me to control with my weekly travel schedule

Daniel

I just tossed all of my hanna checkers. After sitting on a shelf for a year, I felt no need to keep them around..
The Elos High resolution test kit for po4 is excellent.

What about trying a single weekly dose for trace elements?

And by the way, your fts still looks absolutely fantastic, Daniel!

Thank you for the compliments !!!

Once a week will it make sense ?

Daniel, is there someone who is at home all the time who could dose stuff? Its not difficult, just a few drops each day.

Yes..... my wife. I have already requested her to drop ProBio S . I just do not want to add more to her shoulders. Feeding tanks , parrots, five dogs and watering tons of plants (one of my wife hobbies), after she arrives at 6 pm from a full day job.....I feel bad also if it just a couple of drops.

Ok ..let me think. This week will be difficult for me going up and down in flights. And Friday I'll be driving to Florida. I will try to meet Perry at the shop in Orlando. They have the full AF line and would like to discuss with them F2F. And could be I come back with some of their stuff....like the micro E .

Cheers

Awww Lucky! Say hi to Perry for all of us!!!

With those changes and the outage in some way I have Alk issues. What else could be generating burnt tips ? I understand or have read a lot that, low nutrients with high alk ( ~ 9 dkh) is the culprit of burnt tips. Plus I have suddenly this RTN in many corals.

Hi Daniel,

I stole this quote from Matt's thread. I have similar issues in my tank (I say "similar" simply from your description in this quoted part, I haven't read through your thread yet). I am pretty sure I caused these issues through nitrate dosing and thus going from "undetectable" phosphate to absolute zero. The alkalinity in my tank has remained steady 7.2-7.5 dKH, so I'm quite sure it's not alk burn even though it does look very similar. I can make the same correlation both recently and also back in September when I had the same thing going on. I think there are lots of reasons for burned tips. I've certainly seen burned tips and sudden RTN from using too much RowaPhos too. I always attributed it to too quick of a decrease, but maybe it is not necessarily the speed or amount of decrease but the complete elimination of phosphate. I'm not sure what the phosphate is at in your tank, but I figured I throw this out there as another idea for you.

Cheers,
Mindy

EDIT: I should have read your thread before I replied...I see your phosphate is actually fairly high. Although that is after you were experiencing RTN which would have contributed to that PO4 reading. I'm slowly becoming the belief that yo-yo PO4 could be almost as bad as yo-yo alkalinity.

Hi Mindy ..... thank you for stopping buy and providing your impute. I take it seriously.

To be honest, I am not sure what was the root of this issue. But as you have read, I really do not have time to use all the tech/stuff that is outside there. I have to stick to my Fuge / Matrix and pray that biology does its job. I do ~15 % WC every weekend thinking that with that I help to replenish whatever is used. But that's all. Let see if the tank can move forward again.

Best !!!
Daniel

This is certainly plausible IMO, I had yoyo PO4 and a slight ALk spike and harmed just about everything in the tank. Don;t know if I'll ever be sure exactly what it was but a PO4 spike looks to have contributed.

Yesterday I arrived home after a week of traveling to find out that all the corals that have been suffering are now dying. In other words, a disaster.

I did a WC , measured Alk at 5 PM , and was 8.3 dkh (normally at 10 PM when I measure it is at 8 dkh for the last month, dosing pumps stop at 6 pm). Feed the fish and said Good buy !!!!.

My wife and I jumped in the car and we are on our way to Florida to expend the week with our youngest son that lives there.

I know that at my return, half of what I have now will be all white.

The other half, or less than a half, of my SPS, looks OK......as of today.

My next posting will be in 10 days showing all the big colonies dead in the tank.

Best
Daniel

BTW: The test Acro is doing good and showing a start of growth in 2 tips.

Dan, have fun!! Enjoy your time with your family!
The glass box at home will do what it is going to do. No matter what.
Just have fun in the sun!

Exactly that Matt. Before leaving I was going to try to frag something and then I decided that I better go and enjoy the trip.

Let see what is left and how I follow with this tank. I can't be " leaving for the tank " . If I continue being so worried then it will be time to leave the hobby because I am not enjoying it..... I am suffering.

I saw them growing. I enjoyed those colonies, I have nice pictures and memories. If they are 100% gone at my return, without posibility of fragging them, well .....it is what it is. I will replace them and enjoy the growing of new ones.

We drove 6 hours yesterday night. It wasn't easy to arrive to NJ south. Lot of traffic due to long weekend. But now we are ready after a good sleep and breakfast to hit the road again.

I would like to see Perry and their corals,at the shop. Could be I leave some orders to be shipped.... if they ship and if they have nice SPS........ LOL (Let see if Perry read this !!!! )

Wohaaa have a nice day you all guys !!!

Daniel

Tank before the cleaning, when I arrived from my trip.

After the FIRST ROUND of cleaning. I still have to take a couple more colonies.
