Daniel's RSM 250 SPS tank

Not all is negative. Some are still growing.

I will post pictures of those during the week.

Question :

What do you do when an Acro grows over the water level ?

Best Daniel

Damn Daniel, sorry for the losses.

Tanks still looks good, and more space, so look on the bright side I guess.

Thank you Mark !!!

I enjoyed seeing those colonies grow from a 1-2" frag. Now they will be replaced with new frags or mini-colonies. Next weekend I am going to pick 2 from a local reefer.

Ouch, Daniel!!
Sorry to see that!!

No problem Matt. I will miss them.

BTW, my Alka was at 9.23 dkh. Most sure because the dead colonies stop using the bicarbonate and I wasn't here to measure it during the week.

Nevertheless, I reduce the dosing in 2 ml (59 to 57 ml) and will measure tomorrow night, as always. This week I do not have travels, so I will be every day at night to fine tune again the Alk nearby 7 dkh.

I have not measured PO4 today, but after 10 days, the tank glass had only a fine algae film. Almost nothing. So I assume I have low PO4 levels.

Well, nothing else from my side.

Best
Daniel

Ps: I almost forget that the last 4 days the skimmer had the air intake blocked and was not skimming at all. The corals were surrounded by a cloud of bubbles.

:( Reminds me of the "crash" I had a couple of years ago...started losing all corals...not just SPS, but LPS too. I put it down to a relative having sprayed air freshener near the tank...but I'll never know. Placing the corals in friends tank saved many.

I hope things turn around for you.

Daniel,
Sorry to not catch up sooner, you have my number, text me and we can chat about your question above. I am also sorry to hear that your tank has suffered. You know what to do, I have always admired your tank and the approach, I especially appreciate tanks that run fuges, and would love to see photos of it as well, assuming you still run it. I know how it feels to get home, so get rested and get on that tank, you have serious skills that will get you back in no time at all :)
Cheers,

You are only dosing 57 mL of alk solution with all those SPS colonies??? Are you still using the B-Ionic (I did a quick search and found that mentioned)? It must be super concentrated. You have a lot more SPS corals than I do and I'm dosing 175 mL per day of Randy's two-part! I find this interesting.

I really hate to see those pictures, hopefully you can get things back on track as your tank is amazing.

I do love the photo of the acro growing out of the water... :fun4:

Hang in there!

I felt sad when I looked at the pictures if your stripped acros. I hope you pick up the pieces and move on without loosing interest.

As for the acropora growing out of water, it will not keep growing vertically. It will start to grow sideways parallel to the water surface. It is unlikely to be attractive.

Thank you Sahin for stopping by. Unfortunately this was just a summary of bad luck. In the middle of changing to a new salt, I had electric outages, lost of temperature stability, peak of Alk and..... the results can be seen.

Don't worry Perry. I will be back like the Phoenix Bird:

In Greek mythology, a phoenix or phenix (Greek: φοῖνιξ phoinix; Latin: phoenix, phœnix, fenix) is a long-lived bird that is cyclically regenerated or reborn. Associated with the sun, a phoenix obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor. According to some sources, the phoenix dies in a show of flames and combustion, although there are other sources that claim that the legendary bird dies and simply decomposes before being born again.[1] According to some texts, the phoenix could live over 1,400 years before rebirth

Yes, I am still running the fuge. I will post pictures and will send you a TxT message when posted.

Good luck Daniel. Hope you can turn things around man. Sad to see such a beautiful tank crash.

Thank you DiscusHeckel !!! Thanks for the advice about the Acro. You are correct, new branches are starting to grow laterally nearby the water surface. It can be seen in the picture. I am exited to see what shape(s) will develop.

Yes, I am still using B-Ionic,
In December/January I was dosing ~82 ml of both parts. Since the start of my issues, in February, I went down to 60 and this week I am already in 55 ml. Yesterday I pumped 57 ml and still the Alk was stable at ~9dkh. So I reduced the dose in 2 ml. Let see what is the Alk tonight.

The corals that are still alive (with polyp extension and no signs of STN) are still not growing or they are doing it very slowly. On top of that I have many nice sized colonies dead. I want to take this tank below 8 dkh.

THANK YOU ALL !!!!

Best
Daniel

UPDATE......will come later. Briefly NOT YET finalized the coral decline. Some trying to survive, some stables and some in good shape as well as the new additions. Details will come later.

For now, I want to share these set of pictures. I was taking pictures for the update when I realized about these pictures. So here we go .

Not more the Note 4 MATT. Changed to a S7 edge. Taken with factory default setting.

Very cool photos, Daniel!
They look like beautiful Rorschach tests. Really neat.
Glad to hear that things are stabilizing.

This picture, especially, is amazing. It kind of makes me a little dizzy looking at it too hard:crazy1: There are a lot of good looking colonies in there still:)

Yep... Dan, you still have a vibrant and dynamic looking reef..
Colour, form and composition are still extremely beautiful.

Thank you guys !!!!

Yes... I still have a colorful reef Tank, but you are seeing the big picture. When you go to the details, then the image change.

I do not regret what I have now at all !!!! I feel very lucky to have achieved this level, but I would like to recover the level I lost. If I can't I will accept my tank destiny.

I have rearranged the tank, moved some survived colonies to emptied spaces (decompression) and have added some new frags and small colonies.

New additions

A big piece. I had to built a support.

Sorry....best out of focus picture I can take.....cream color ..LOL

Nice mini colony

More pictures with survivors corals and the "Test Coral", to come later. Now I have the mother's day lunch ... yummy!!!

Those pieces have great potential! That first tabling coral is a beauty!

Very cool reflection pics, I love the "mouth" of the purple monti. :) Glad to see a significant number of your corals are doing well, very nice to hear and see!

Thank you Mark !!

I am also happy that your tank is moving now in the correct direction. My tank has many survivors but still is not in the correct direction.

I was able to reduce the Alk from 9 to 7 by stopping the dosing pumps (1 unit per day was the tank consumption). Tonight dosing pumps will be on and let see if the dosing compensate the use and the Alk stays at ~7 dkh.

Yesterday with Alk at 8 dkh, CA was at 450 ppm and Mg at 1300 ppm. I am waiting a new Mg test kit (salifert). Mine is Red Sea and has 2 months expired . I got an Elos new and was giving 1050 ppm. I will wait the Salifert and stick with 1 brand. Let see next weekend.

I will be in a business trip in Germany this week. So my wife (she is a Saint) will be feeding tanks and testing Alk to see if this new dosing schedule keeps Alk at 7 dkh. If needed I can increase or decrease the dosing with the phone (Apex).

Cheers
Daniel

Some pictures of SURVIVORS !!!

The test Acro....

I belive it has at least 1 month. I need to go back in the thread and find when I posted it. (Confirmed, got it 3/27 http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showpost.php?p=24428773&postcount=398 )

One SSC in perfect shape.

Another SSC in perfect shape. Both with slow growth but healthy.

This one is growing with the shape of a hand .

This one is encrusting....very slowly.

This other, the same Acro as the previous. Is just hanging there.

Setos is doing well, slow growing.

Cheers
Daniel
