Daniel's RSM 250 SPS tank

Hi all....... Thank for the comments. They keep me ongoing on this Hobby.

As an update, things are doing OK. The Aussie SSC didn't stop STN, so I took it out, clean all the glued area, dipped it in "Reef Dip from Seachem" (coral disinfectant). Also, With a brush I painted, with the desinfectant, all the damaged area. Then I glued it back to the rock. Let see if now will stop.

Sorry, picture is a little out of focus, but you can see the repaired area of the minicolony.

Now here we go with a short video of the tank. Unfortunately I do not have the professional tools, as my friend Matt, but not too bad for a very fast, non edited video with a Note 4 phone......... :lolspin::lolspin:

That video is great Dan! The tank is looking really lush and grown in....you know what that means....Upgrade:lolspin:

Merry Christmas!

Loved the video, and I hope the SSC settles down for you! I think the tank looks fantastic, love the crowded look ... of course. :)

Daniel!! I haven't been keeping up lately.
Those progression shots are fantastic. Really nice growth.
Your video with that crappy phone of yours is excellent!! :)
I wonder what's happening with the ssc.. Hopefully your intervention will do the trick.
I love your lush reef garden.

Thank you Matt, Mark, Matt and Userman Invalid. I really appreciate your good coments.

Let me know what do you think about these values. I did all the test between 10-11 PM , today.

Alk 7.5-8 dkh (2 times by Salifert, 1 with Hanna)

Ca 450 ppm ( Salifert )

Phosp. 0.09, 0.12 ppm ( 2 times URL Hanna)

NO3 2.5 ppm (Salifert).

Since July this is the first time I have such high P and N.

I think I am feeding too much and not giving time to the biology to export nutrients.

Corals looks all OK, beside the reported issue with the Aussi SSC. But, since I did the new treatment 3 days ago, I can't see any new damage. Polyp extencion is again normal in this coral. But I need a couple of weeks , at least, to know if I won.

All other corals have the same Polyp extencion at night (1 hour after lights off) that I have seen for months. Neither I see any issue on their tissues (base recesion or STN).

Bottom line, I am not in panic mode, but I am now in "Alert Mode" with those P and N values.

My first action will be the only one I can take based on my setup....REDUCE FOOD. I know i have increased the amount of food during my winter vacation. And that is probably not good.

I also increased the number of fish. Hence I increase the feeding and.....it is a circle.

Tomorrow will be "diet day" and tomorrow is also standard WC day. It's already 2 days I have 35 G ready to go. I will use 20 G for WC (my standard).

At night I will repeat the N and P measurements, as well as Alk and Ca and will report.

Any thoughts / comments are always welcome !!!

Cheers
Daniel

Alk 7.5-8 dkh (2 times by Salifert, 1 with Hanna) - Throw away the Hanna Tester, the Salifert kit is all you need. 7.5 down to 6.5 is the ideal ALK range in my opinion.

Ca 450 ppm ( Salifert ) - Seems a bit high, not balanced against ALK. I wouldn't worry about it too much though.

Phosp. 0.09, 0.12 ppm ( 2 times URL Hanna) - Does the tank reflect increased phosphates? Is algae growing on the glass faster, or is there any algae outbreak? Let your corals tell you if this number is too high.

NO3 2.5 ppm (Salifert). - perfect

Matt , thank you for reading my posting and your comments.

Alk : Agree with you about 6.5 - 7 dkh being the ideal alk range. I have reduced my dosing in 2 ml for Alk and Ca. I dosing B-Ionic 2 parts. I am dosing equal parts of alk and Ca. I will watch the evolution of the Alk level during the week.

Ca: Because I am dosing B-Ionic 2 parts balanced solutions I measure it every once in a while. I will keep an eye on it more close during the following weeks.

Phosp. : No more algae growth in the glass than the "dust I have seen" growing in the last months. Because I have been at home this month, I keep cleaning the glass as soon as I see a "dust spot". I will not touch the glasses in the next 3 days. But I am 100% confident that is not more than what I have seen in months.

No algae at all in rocks. No algae outbreak of any kind. The refugium tank front glass, the one I clean all the time, just get some "dust growth " in different spots every day. When I moved all to the new fuge, there was an important "glass algae growth increase in the fuge glasses ". That has disappeared and the system is again in equilibrium.

NO3 : Is the first time I have it at this level. After my nutrients crash, I assembled the fuge. I didn't measured N for months !!! When I did it, it was 0 ppm. Since then (around June , may be) it has always been around 0 ppm. I was using Red Sea kit. Now switched to Salifert. Last week was 0.5 ppm when my P was 0.04-0.06 ppm . It has increased with my P increase. But I am not worry about this level because "you all" are always targeting to have between 3-5 ppm of N .

I will keep posting how this evolve.

Thanks again !!!

Daniel

On the main youtube page where is the video is located, click on "SHARE", then click on "EMBED". That will create a line of text complete with coding for forum thread posts. Simply copy and paste the text into your post and once you complete your post the video will show up like I have done instead of a link.

Yes, HD = high definition. I added an extension added to my Chrome Browser to automatically select the highest resolution for Youtube videos. For everyone else, you need to select the highest video resolution to see the video in its best quality and enjoy it.

Daniel the tank looks great. I love that purple tipped Acro reaching out like a hand from the rocks to touch the front glass.
And I love how open and irregular that birds nest is on the left. I wonder why it's growing like that. It's very creepy.. It almost belongs in Mike's creepy tank!

I don't have anything to add to Matt's response to your latest numbers.. No need for panic but it might be time to look at how to make things a bit more efficient..

Dan, all the best in 2016!
This might be the year, you get a bigger tank....... Your corals will demand it.. :)
How is the ssc doing after your last intervention?

Thank you Matt.

Alk went down to 7 dlkh, as I wanted . Phosp. went down to ~ 0.03 and Nitrates ~2.

I will measure again during the week. Oh men, a bigger tank means bigger problems, bigger WC, more dosing..... could be for my retirement (in 9 years ) ? . For now I am OK.... I think :p

Things are looking wonderful Dan, love that video! Happy New Years!

Thank you !!!!

Happy New Year Daniel!

Thank you Mark !!! I saw that you spent the start of the year giving your tank a new look. That was great. All the best for you too !!

Today i did my first WC with AF Probiotic Reef Salt (20 G). It started, let see if I see something different. I will NOT go for the full product line. No time to keep all those dosing.

My Alk was today, at 10 AM (normally I measure it at ~ 9 PM) 7 dkh. The AF salt quality certificate stated that at 1023 the alk has to be 7.7 dkh for that lot. I measured it twice (Salifert Kit) and at 1026 it was 8.4 and 8.3 dkh.

Could that difference in salinity have an effect on the Salt Alk (increased). Nevertheless I did the WC. All looks OK.............now PICTURES

There is more...........WAIT !!!

This is the Aussie SSC with some STN in the base that I treated and re-glued to the rock. Tissue started to grow over the glue (encrusting) very small yet, but at least not more STN on this as of today.
