DAS skimmer club

I've been sold on the DAS for a while. Unfortunately I've been waiting for a month to get one since Oeca is still out of stock.

And here's the neck after running for a few hours. This is a mesh modded aquabee. It started overflowing on me last night and I really had to turn the air down today because it would skim very wet and I was fearing that it would overflow again. I think it's getting dialed in where I want it now though with the air turned down about 25%. So in the end I'm not sure if the mesh mod was helpful in this size skimmer.

Well, you will notice most sites have removed the wattage figures... the pumps are clones of pumps that should be the wattage they were listed as... but if I remember right, the wattage on the Turbine pump for the 110 was about 2x that of the DAS, and about 2x what the mfg was claiming. The 'clones' are poor copies of the Oceanrunner pumps. They run hot, dont pull nearly as much air (about 10 scfh/280lph if I remember right). Some have modded their pumps with mesh, or venturis, etc... but why bother? For $40-50 more, you can just have a skimmer that really works out of the box, and if you are into modding, a DAS will pull over 700lph of air if you mesh-mod it.

Can the DAS skimmers run ozone? Has anyone modded a tube to the skimmer collection cup where it can drain the excess skimmate?

I emptied my first cup full of skimmate yesterday. It was a medium tea color. The smell, however, was horrendous. I have 4 big mastiffs, and this stuff smelled worse than all their shiit combined. I have one concern/complaint about this skimmer. The twist lock collection cup is a PITA. I have to twist it SUPER tight to keep water from leaking out. It was leaking out about a drop every few seconds. No big deal if it were in sump, but this is completely external. With the amount of torque i have to use to tighten the cup, I'm afraid I will crack or break something one day. I do not think this is a good design choice for extruded acrylic at all. Maybe it's just my particular skimmer, too much tolerance or something, but I much prefer the thumb screws and keyholes.

So if you had to do it all over again would you? Getting me nervous the day before I make the big decision.

The twist lock needs almost no pressure IME, his O-ring must be bad... or missing.

Mine has not leaked at all.
 
no my o-ring is not missing or it would be leaking no matter how hard I twisted it - I will see if I can get a replacement o-ring though or find something that fits at HD

I used the silicone lubricant as hahn suggested and it has worked - for now at least

If I could do it over again sure I would get it. Before that I had a PM skimmer with mesh modded GenX pump on it and the DAS is superior. Build quality wise however it's not even close. Considering what HB said that his requires no pressure to seal I'm hoping that it's just an o-ring problem.

Good to hear about your skimate, I have the same problem with the
twist lock collection cup.

I have an EX-1 and about the same time I bought a AquaeuroUSA 250. The DAS is a far superior skimmer. I may try to mod the AEU into a recirc with DAS pumps but that seems like a whole lot of work compared to just buying a new EX-2 or 3.

Thats no joke... considering the Aquabees are $110ish each, its just easier to buy the rest and get an EX-2 or whatever.... sell the AE250 all together.
 
I have a das ex3 how many gph are running through these skimmers. If gph was increased do you think it would skim wetter

Which pump are you using on the EX-1 i know DAS recommends a turn over rate of 1.5 x tank volume per hour. Correct?? not sure.
