Designer clowns... Why?

I hate them with a passion.
All I find them good for is to feed groupers, lionfish and other predators.

Do you think a goldendoodle is any more a designer dog than a golden retriever or poodle or any other pure bred dog?
I wonder why anyone even cares what others keep in their own tank

Dogs? It is proven that some breeds are unhealthy because of the looks people bred them for. People who care about the health of their pets should know. As far as I know that is not an equal comparison.

Well, my comment was towards the person posting about goldendoodle, and my point is all pure bred dogs were selectively bred much like the clowns, and also in the same manner it's a matter of irresponsible breeding that causes issues.

Thanks for the link.
I think some of the Picasso and extra spot variations look pretty cool. All variations where called misbars when I started, none were purposefully bred, as far as I remember. I've been away awhile and it just seems like an odd trend to me.

I do think it's kind of exploded into a thing where so many different variations have come about it's near impossible to even ID properly on some, or at least what that particular breeder is calling them, and some I'm not crazy about myself, but I don't go out of my way to knock what I know someone else happens to keep or be fond of,I just scroll past.

It did start quite a while back from just an oddball collected from wild someone happen to find something unique about their imperfection, and I think it's gone long past being a trend and will most likely continue long past being a trend.

I do think there are too many back yard breeders just breeding away and often inbreeding, but that goes for non designers as well.

I do admit when I first saw picasso's come around I was not crazy about them, and the prices of them did not help, but then the random patterns just sorta grew on me, next thing I know I find them to be my favorite, it just seems harder to find ones that were bred responsibly and free of defects.

We don't care what others do. But the op asked if others thought they were ugly. So seeking opinions which we answered.

I just find it humorous when I see people bag on designers, and so many times their avatar contains a pure bred cat or dog...

I own two pairs of wild caught clowns; 3 of the clowns are Onyx.
I think there are two types of clownfish that sometimes can be classified as "wobblers" in legal terms. So what's a wobbler you might ask?
"A “wobbler” isn’t a misdemeanor, nor is it a felony. It’s both. It’s a crime that prosecutors can charge as and judges can sentence as either a misdemeanor or felony."

Now back to clowns.
Picasso clowns and Lightning clowns occur in the wild. Overtime they've been classified as designer clownfishes despite their natural occurrence in the ocean. I like Picasso and Lightning clowns but whether or not they are designer clowns is open to interpretation.
Here's a video of a clown in the wild that most breeders would classify as "Semi-Picasso". Fast forward to 4:15

My main issue with designer clownfish is that they are so omnipresent at all stores these days. Wild caught clownfish are hard to find by now and I refuse to buy captive bred because because it's impossible to tell what kind of mix they are.

Most of them do look stupid. And they're fish so they are really dumb. They practice incest which is illegal. I do like lightning maroons though. Those weren't in the link.

Yeah that can be an issue, and so many people just want to breed clowns and it's not terribly hard to do.

I got my donisreef picasso's about 9 years ago, and I wanted to breed them especially since they were a pretty hot commodity at the time, but when I noticed the male had a slight underbite I realized it just was not the responsible thing to do, and unfortunately too many people would rather cash in.

Cool video Eric, thanks for posting that!

I don't necessarily have anything against "designer" clownfish, I just wish that breeders would practice more responsible breeding by culling, making sure their pair isn't incestuous etc.. The sad thing is people are money hungry and don't want to be responsible, they want to "try" and make money off of this (lol), so why should they cull?

I currently have a pair of ORA spotcinctus clowns and overall they seem like respectable bicinctus clowns, just with a few extra dots and the "pearl eyes", I really like them.

But isn't saying designers are ugly and having a pure bred animal, cat in my case, being consistent? The breed of cat I have goes back a decent ways and is recognized. I want a clown that is recognized as well. Not some recent Mish mash. Like a siamese crossed with a calico.... ugly in my mind but I am sure some would love it!

And that is why I don't like fancy siamese bred for shows. They are not like the breed origibally was in siam, now thialand.

Yeah, your breed of cat goes back farther but a big part of that is we've been able to keep cats and dogs in captivity and had the ability to selectively breed them for a much longer time, I just don't see much difference, it all still comes down to responsible breeding in order to minimize the problems that come w/ inbreeding.
I just find it funny how many times I've seen people against selective breeding that do display their purebred animals, I see it quite a bit.
Nothing against your animal, I happen to love siamese myself and have had a few myself.
I just think there are a lot of people that think designer clowns were just somehow created or manufactured or something, many did originate naturally in the wild, we just do as we've done, pick certain looks or qualities that fit our needs or taste in what we keep for pets.
