Hey guys! If anyone has an adult desjardini sailfin with full on adult coloration please post some pics!! I am very intrigued by this fish! I saw one while I was at PEA a month or so ago and it literally came to the surface and allowed my girlfriend to rub its back!! I would love to have one down the road in my next upgrade so post em up please!!

Go for it, Sailfins make awesome long lived pets but they like being the King

I had one that made it close to 15 years old. Was the size of a dinner plate. King of the tank but not mean. Would let me pet it and eat right from my fingers. Would recommend one to everyone.

Mine is mean as they come but he is also the elder of the fish. Not a great IPad pic

Wow guys they are beautiful!! Thanks for all the pics! Lets keep em coming! I wish I could have one now but I only have 125 gallon tank and I guess they need way more room than that huh?

Mine started in a 125g when he was 3/4", fast forward a year and 4 months he is 5.5" long and 2" thick

What size tank is he in now? I was thinking of getting one and upgrading in a year which has been my plan all along. I am 95% sure that the 125 is going to become a 220 by next winter but I know things can derail upgrades in life so ive been cautious about adding the sailfin in the 125. How long do you think id have before he outgrew the 125 if I got him say at 1-1/2"??

Yes I agree. Ive learned quite a bit about patience in the few short years ive been enjoying this hobby! Haha, at any rate I tend to agree with you especially on this subject. Ive waited this long whats another year. The above poster just sparked my interest so I figured I would ask. Actually I had to learn this the hard way, when I was new to the hobby I had a 4ft standard 55 gallon tank. One day a few months in I was strolling through the local fish store and saw the most beautiful fish. It was a clown tang at about 2.5 inches and at the time I knew nothing about it. The fish store had a tag on the tank that read " min tank size 55 gal., reef safe". I asked the employee if it was a good fit for my tank and she said absolutely, you will love it! Well needless to say that poor fish lasted less than a week in a poorly oxygenated and wayyy too small a tank.

Each fish is different, but usually they adapt to their environment so it shouldn't grow too big too quickly. 125 is plenty big for a small sailfin and even if it doubles every year (2"-> 4"-> 8") you have a couple of years to do your upgrade.
After much contemplation I just added one to my 120gal a couple of days ago :D

I had a desjardini for years in my 210, and just recently sent him off to live in a local 1000g tank after deciding my new 520 wouldn't be big enough for him to be happy long term. Sailfins get ridiculously wide if properly fed, and grow very, very quickly. It is ill-advised to put one in a 125g IMHO. I was very attached to that fish, but 9" long and 3" wide is just too much for even an 8' tank.
