getting a small frag of purple death palys and armor of god zoas. what are the difference between palys and zoas? also, are these two corals hard to keep? whats the best spot i should put the purple deaths and the armor of gods at?

Lower conditions make the colors look the best, higher in the tank might grow them faster but in my exp. dont look as good. keepem low, and i think paly's are larger

Zoanthids are a lot smaller and dont' display prey capture capablity unline Palythoas. their more preyed on by zoanthid eating nudis compared to palythoas and protopalys as these larger polyps take in debris and sand into thier stalks as protection. A lot of palys also have the green slit in the mouth.

Actually, zoanthid is an all encompassing term for animals in the family zoanthidae. For instance Palythoa, Protopalythoa, Parazoanthus, Zoanthus, etc. are all Zoanthids. Your description works for the hobbyist deffinitions of a Palythoa vs. a "zoa" but as far as actual classification they're way off. In fact, most of the polyps within the hobby called "Palys" are actually Zoanthus species, including those with a green mouth often called people eaters, which are typically Zoanthus gigantus. True Palythoa aren't seen all that often in the hobby any more and aren't typically the colors that people would like to collect.

Sorry, I know you were just trying to give the easy answer, but this is just one of those things that bugs me about the zoanthid side of the hobby.

I've seen TRUE Paly's and what is commonly term'd as paly. I agree with you.

IME armor of gods will do well in a variety of light conditions, but you'll get the most bibrant orange with higher light. Purple deaths, which are a Protopalythoa, tend to do better with a little more subdued lighting, especially when it comes to T5's. Don't frget that both should be started on the bottom of the tank and in a shadier spot and then moved to higher light levels gradually, or in the case of the purple death started ina shadier spot and kept there.

I'll be slithering back out of the zoathid forum now :p Good to see you still around Charles.

Thanks Peter, figured got ta hold the fort since Mucho, your self and others aren't around as much do to different reasons.
