Hi All,

My Moorish Idol has sadly has taken ill, im having trouble ID the illness. IM not sure if its a bacteria infection or due to parasites. Ive taken some photos so hopefully someone might be able to identify it. I reckon he's got a few days left in him max. He hasnt eaten in 2 days and is full time just focusing on breathing it seems (not good).

Ive got him in my hospital tank with plenty of water aeration and have been treating with Melafix (Cajeput Oil) for the past two days until I can identify what exactly im supposed to be treating for. I initially was hoping to do a fresh water dip until I saw the lesions appear and read that its probably the worst thing to do for him now.

NOTE: Ive had this guy for 3+ years with no issues and nothing has changed in my tank for 6+ months. No other fish in the DT are displaying any issues either.

Any thoughts?

it looks like a bacterial or fungus infection. Did you dip it in fresh water? Try a type of antibiotics. Seems like it has fin rot also. I am leaning more to a fungi type infection.

No freshwater dips are not recommended once they have lesions\open wounds. Can you give me some more specific advice?

I don't know whats wrong but it looks like a bacterial infection has a foothold. I'd use nitrofurazone really fast if you have it.

Ive never heard of it. A quick google has it in 'cream' form. Any recommended products or brands available in Australia?

Its an active ingredient in Furan 2 and useful for some septic looking bacterial infections. To answer your question I just ordered it amongst other meds from Fosters & Smith, to keep in my med cabinet as its handy for treating butterflys that come in with 'red streaks'. It comes in sachets that you can dissolve.

You could try your vet I guess?

Sadly he passed away during the night :(

Quite shattered as he was one of my original fish having kept him for nearly 4 years.
