Has anyone found the optimal current to drive the LEDs? Based on my results The PAR and watts seemed linear based on the total current. Just woundering how much more I can push the LEDs and still get 50,000 hours out of them.

I was working with 3 different drivers and here are the results. The PAR and LUX readings were taken at 24" the fixture is 8"x24" with 48 CREE XR-e with 80degree optics.

4 Mean Well LPC 35-700
12 LEDs each in series
296 PAR
142 LUX
122 Watts

2 Mean Well ELN 60-1050
2 parallel strings of 12 LEDs each in series
210 PAR
101 LUX
94 Watts

1 Mean Well CLG 150-48A
4 parallel strings of 12 LEDs each in series
323 PAR
153 LUX
146 Watts

Hmm it's interesting to see how this play out, by my calculations the LPC 35-700 is the most efficient at ~2.43 PAR per watt, about 10% better than the other two.

You talking about me :) I only have one string up and running.
Nah, I was just referring to the fact Widmer,s build thread got taken a bit off track. Your post contains all the vital links & should be a sticky.

Yep, daunting even to those who have been subscribed to Sundowner's thread since day one :)

It should work assuming you can switch some for royal blues. You also maybe near the low end of the LED count. Don't know dimension for a 125 off the top of my head. One consideration is dimming. I see they are dimmable, but does the dimming mode fit with your overall design plans?

[EDIT]
Wow lost a whole page somehow. This was a response to phensig (probably spelled wrong) on the last page.

You can call me Paul if you want.
All the cool reefkeeping related names were taken, i got tired of trying, so just went with my email instead :)

I think i might just order the tried and true XRE kit.
http://www.rapidled.com/servlet/the-32/48-Premium-LED-DIY/Detail
Spares me the hassle of the mixx and match/spacing issues ect. Ill get two kits w/48 LED's each. total will be 98 bulbs which puts me at about 1 LED per 13 square inches of water surface. Plenty.
Ill get 60 degree optics, that should be just about perfect for my tank.
Ill get the Mean Well ELN-60-48D dimmable drivers. Since they are the D model my understanding is I need to go to radio shack and get a few 1-10v dimmers w/pots. I don't exactly know what that means, but I'm hoping the guy at radio shack can point me in the right direction.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I do have a question
Quote from this mornings email:
"The D version is a manual dim, meaning you
would have a knob and turn it up or down to dim the lights. The D
version is easier to put together and use than the P. Whichever version
you choose, you'll still need a 10V power supply. In addition, as
mentioned for the P version you'll need a PWM controller and for the D
version you'll need a 0-10V regulator (can be made with a pot from Radio
Shack)"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Im getting confused with this. Adding them all up its starting to get out of hand. 8 drivers, and now 8 power supplies? So I'm gonna need to have 16 outlets used? Im already using too many Isn't there a way to do this all with only a couple outlets being used?

At a later date, I also want to add a row of 10w LEDs like soundwave did to add the pronounced "shimmer" effect.

^ Post should be a sticky ("Everything you wanted to know about LED......). One place for all the links.

Thanks, somehow I missed Widmer's thread (thought I had seen them all ).............though a bit diluted by Mr-yaks-a-lot-but-never-builds-anything :lmao:

Glad you enjoyed my thread, and I hope the yammering on the latter pages ended up being entertaining :lolspin:

Later this summer I will be expanding my projection goals and I'll be sure to post pictures :)

ErikS,

Sundowner? Don't think I have seen his or maybe I don't recognize the name. Unless I am responding a lot of time I just read the post. Trying to keep track of who said what is beyond me.

pheinzig,
For 96 LEDs you need a driver. The LEDs plug into the driver (I only say this becuase I am not sure where 16 outlets came from). The meanwells can share the same wall plug (I assume you have read enough to understand the loaiding issue - if not I did a long post a little earlier with a link). The 10v wart will need a plug. So 2 should work.

Not good enough with the meanwells to help with dimming types.

I thought that this was interesting as well. The CLG150-48 is supposed to be 90% efficient and the LPC 35-700 only 85% efficient. I plan on sticking with the CLG 150 For my sump room build as it has a manual dimming function, one driver is cleaner than four and at $88 bucks a pretty good value. I'm glad I used it to replace thoes BuckPucks.

Frode,

YES! Please tell us where you got that. I have been looking for that very unicorn for a while ;-)

Or is it a narwhal...?

Stu

I got my stuff from all over the world :lolspin:
First set of LEDs from www.rapidled.com ...but the wrong type of Meanwell.
Dispite their great service, importing from the US to the Netherlands gave me a major set back in time. Customs took for ages to let the stuf through :crazy1:

So I got some stuf from Germany http://www.led-tech.de/en/index.html (English version), extra LEDs and heat sinks.

Only to find out there is a specilized company - Lumotech - at 20 km from my home town. Though they do not resell to private persons, they made an exception for my Aquarium Led-project. Where this hobby gets you :love1:
So that's where I purchased my powersupplies.

Anyone in need for two Meanwell ELN-60-48P ?

No, that would be a mis-type on my part :lmao: I meant Soundwave.

Awesome thread. I spent nearly 4 hours reading up before I attempted and finished my first LED fixture. Its a 12/12 white/blue setup with 2 meanwell drivers. Its a 8x12 fixture for a 20g tank. Now that I am familiar with building them, I wanted to get some suggestions on how much leds I should run on a 34''x14'' fixture for my 40B. The tank is completely SPS and clams, if that helps to decide on how much leds. Also, I would appreciate some info on led spacing with side to side and front to back.

I found one of these on Amazon.DE (the Osram DIM SA). It says 230 volt. Do I need to use that end of hte amplifier? We are on a different power standard (110-120V) to use the Osram? I thought about the PLM DALI card but I am not sure if the meanwells are Dali compatable/

Hi, I have not being paying attention to the operating voltage while posting it at RC, sorry. All here in EU is running on 220V or is at least 220/110V capable. But on your question I was looking closer to the spec sheet of the amplifier and there is just the operating voltage of 220V mentioned.

If that is truth, than it will be ok to use a converter from 110 to 220V in line with the amplifier. The amplifier is just pulling 2W so I can't realize problems by using a converter other than it is an additional piece of equipment.
BTW in work (we are often at pleases with just 110V) we use such converters 24/7 and with >200W for PC and battery charger (battery's >9000mAh) and other appliances and so far we had no problems. Just google the right one for the application you need.

And no, the Mean Wells are not DALI compatible. DALI is a complete different approach to control light systems. Its digital and all equipment connected to the data bus have its one address. GHL is supporting this with an expansion card called PLM DALI. The bad think is that LED drivers for this system are very pricey. Take a look here: http://www.eldoled.com/?e=vWCY1lR06...lTD2TlBSAgZAEXZ17Kn1gMW3Ut_4pD_PU9ulXnK4nXsaQ

While we're talking about DALI and possible drivers for this system, what are you thinking about this Der Willw Zur Macht or Kcress?

I ordered the Osram DIM SA 10 so once I get it I will need some help I think from you.

What is the 10 behind the DIM SA in your sentence? You bought it ten times? I hope not! You need just one for your ten drivers!

I was looking for some step up converters for you guys how are thinking about a application with the Osram Dim SA and found out that there are a lot out there just around ten bucks.
