Dang mavgi you sounded like you were talking to a 2 year old.The whole watt issue is a big debate I rather not start on Hahns thread.It was until Hahn started this thread that the whole low wattage skimmer pump craze got big.I used beckett skimmers for the better part of 6 yrs.Do you really think I care about how much electricity I waste?I want it to work effeciently,and if I can save a little wattage in the process then great.If not I can care less.
I got the pumps cheap,$10 for one and $12 for the other.If it doesnt pan out,I lose a little money and they will make great saltwater mixing pumps.

Maybe you save on the pump but in the other way you will pay a lot more in your electric bill.... we pay for watt use and if you can decrease the total watt use you pay less .

Methinks that the 'Red Dragon Eater' was not 'engineered' to actually outperform a Red Dragon, but literally eat it... like a wood chipper. At that, it is a huge success. Look at the teeth on that needlewheel, and the saliva like epoxy dripping off everything like an alien's mouth from the Alien franchise. I wouldn't be shocked if the pump runs on 'acid blood' and a tiny needlewheel jumps out from the center of the larger needlewheel for 'scare factor'. Its the impeller diameter/thickness, the volute diameter/thickness, the venturi diameter, and the outlet diameter... all factors here. If you go shrinking a few things w/o changing the others, you can end up with a very hot pump.
For instance, changing the output diameter and venturi alone means that the impeller will be spinning alot of water that doesnt move in/out of the pump... so it is wasting energy on itself. If you start making the impeller smaller, and maybe the volute only as deep as the outlet diameter (outlet diameter and volute depth should match), you are adjusting other parts of the pump so it wastes less energy on itself.
It always makes me think of modern autos...3200-5000lbs of auto to move 200lbs of human... the engine has to waste more power on moving itself than its cargo.
