DIY Red Dragon Pumps, gathering ideas.

When are you getting it? I think this pump will fit it. It looks like a 1 inch inlet on the bubble diffuser pan.

already talk with the owner Anton Burian just waiting for answer , in the original it's come with the RD6500liter he can supply the RD 110volt but i think the laguna 5000 will be better need to check more ....

Hah... whaddya know... the idea worked. Lol. Better than expected too. I mean, sure, well have to see how these things wear over time, but even if the shafts break every year or something... its still a deal.

I dont know that a custom volute would be of any improvement, as the asymetric design and contoured interior of the Laguna is a good design as is, and if smjtkj will do me a favor of measuring the interior diameter of the volute... that may be all we need.

you know it's very interesting when i look on the BLACK BOX BK clone by AQUA-EXCEL it's look like the use same pump who knows , they told me it's will be available here in about 3 month .

Ime, one different between stock volute and large diy volute is the noise. With stock volute, when the pump is used externally you can hear the noise within it, while large volute is almost silent.

If its due to size rather than material thickness, then the 2400/2905 versions with the larger volutes might not have the noise problem either.

It is under water right now, but the 2400 is silent. Now the air intake hose is something different! Maybe it is the larger volute
that helps. Quangtam, I know you have shown pics, but I would like a list of materials used for the volute you made.

Not sure where you are buying the Max-Flo 2400's but I found that they are on sale at Foster & Smith.

Also wanted to ask if anyone has see these pumps, I found them on the same site and they look to have a nice large volute. They are the HY-Drive Waterfall Pumps. The smallest one is rated for 3,250 gph @ 150w.

Yes, I saw those, but the wattage is a little better on the Lagunas.
The volute is nice and large though.

Yeah the wattage is not as good and the pump is larger too.

Where did you get your 2400

No niose from the 2905. I think i can crank her up some more with a bigger pad, I post some results tonight with a vid.

Well, I just tinkered a bit with the pump and venturi and I am at 86 watts at the bottom of the trash can! I am still pulling
100 scfh. or better I say better because of the huge restriction I am putting on the air flow with this meter. Hahn, by the way, it appears that the 5000 is 1250 gph stock and 85 watts. I may be wrong but I think a pump that much smaller with the original volute will have trouble getting 100 scfh.

Does anyone have a max-flo 900? The 2400 is nice, but I don't thnk my modified NW-200 has any hope of handling 100 scfh! I am interested in modding a 900 with hopes of getting 60 scfh @ <40 watts. Is the volute large like it is on the 2400?

Anyone have pictures of a max-flo 900 so we can assess it's potential for being a smaller DIY red dragon?

Hey guys, I havent done it yet, but I think if you take a 3 inch PVC coupler and cut it down so that the ring of pvc in the center is where the O- ring is around the base of the laguna pump, it will be snugg, at least on a 5000, and is an easy PVC shroud that can be used for preliminary tests without having to go CNC yet. Will post pics when I get mine done

I dont thing that the Max flow has a floating impeller, ie it has a shaft that goes all the way through so it will be harder to make a customized impeller shroud

hmm i should mod my 5000 tonight. So we just use a dremel and slowly cut away from the center until the brass tension ring is off. Do we keep the original plate or do we replace it with a disk the same size?

Thats a cool pic of the garbage can skimmer! Now to build a 3 ft tall by 2 foot in diameter skimmer with a 9 inch neck. LOL These pumps are the shiz, Glad That sweedish guy pointed us to these pumps a few mos ago! These pumps will blow the cups off many skimmers.
