DIY Stands Template and Calculator

Neptunehood would it be possible to get the plans for your stand. I want to build that type of stand for a 55 gallon. I want to know can I use 2x4's or do I need to use 2x6's.
Thank you for your time

Can someone tell me if my stand is suitable? I built the stand a little bit bigger on the sides due to a bit of overhang I wanted on each side. After building it, I noticed that the front to back rim of the tank is not supported. I will be putting a piece of 3/4" plywood on the top of the stand anyways, so I don't think it will be a big deal, but I wanted to make sure. The display tank is a 24" x 24" x 12" 30 gallon.

Thanks!

I see NO problem with your thought of add 3/4" ply to the top. Your tank would be well supported with the frame work you have there. :hammer:

Sure. Haven't had a chance but when I get it designed I'll put it up for review and attach the sketchup

Hello Everyone,

I just finished the stain and seal coats for my stand, and wonder if anyone recommends a specific wax for a final coat?

I am planning on applying the wax with steel wool so that the finish comes out soft and smooth, but wonder if there are any issues to consider in using this method - or if anyone has other ideas for the final step.

All right, here is my second attempt, based on the sketch provided above.

Sketchup Here

Everything is in inches. This is all 2x4 wood, no plywood.

20L Actuals (with rim): 30 3/16 x 12 1/2 x 12 11/16

It will hold 2x 20L on the top and in the middle. It could hold 2x 20L on the bottom as well, but that'd be a pain to drain.

The entirety of each tank is supported by 2 reds each, on the long sides. The short sides are not supported. The blues stabilize the stand and do not contact the tanks at any point. Greens are screw strips.

Should I add anything to the center supports?

Thanks!

Here's a photo, hopefully visible, of the project. I am planning to knock down the roughness with steel wool and wax and just wondered if anyone had a better idea.

Thanks.

Hello I have a few questions I have a 96" x 24" x 24" 240g glass tank I would like to build the stand 36" tall
1)what size wood would i have to use?

2)am I able to just build the frame setup my tank on it and then in the future add plywood and finish it while its full, basically whats the minimum amount I have to do to make it usable (its a cost thing on a very limited budget atm)

3)Is there a way to make this look good like a minimalist design, my sump will be in the garage on the other side of the wall behind the tank.

I have a 180 gallon and I built the stand. I did not put ply wood on top the tank is on the rim around the perimeter of my 2x8 stand. I want to put 3/4" plywood on top now so I can shim the plywood so it makes contact with my tank all the way around (I have some gaps right now).

Can I add the plywood if I have no support in the middle to hold the plywood? I was thinking it would be alright since the tank is only sitting on the perimeter of the plywood.

Brycen97,
You are only supporting the corners of that tank?

zland1,
IF you have a middle leg you can use a 2x6 if not you will need a 2x10.
The only reason you might need sides it to keep if from wigglng (but well built won't be a problem). I have a frame only.
Sure, but good is in the eye of the beholder :)

Dseg,
The plywood might sag in the middle (especially of water get on it), but structurally I see no reason for needing cross braces.

great thread,I used the information when I built the stand for my 170.

but I'm hoping someone can help with something further,RC is so slow for me that it's too painful to do searches to process info.

I just bought a used rimless 50g (44X22x12H) and stand. 1/4" glass and top bracing

I have the tank on the stand and half full of water (there's 1/2" pink foam) and there's some play between the tank and stand on the long runs, the corners are firmly seated but I can wiggle the foam about 3/16 of and inch.

The stand has 3/8" plywood on the top and bottom,no cross members, there was one on top but I pulled it out thinking it was high-centering.Stand seems to be fine, the fact that all four corners are hitting seems like a good start but I'm not certain if I like the bottom pane not firm on the foam,no idea if it's touching in the middle.

I guess I'm wondering if as is do you guys see a problem?
Can I drive in wood shims under the foam to take up this play around the perimeter?
Or,Should I pull off the 3/8 plywood and try 3/4,I would do this in a heartbeat if I was sure it would work.

The tank is only going to hold water and eggcrate(frags) but in the future it could have rock placed in it on the bottom pane.

Any input would be great.
Thanks

1)Is that 2x6 for top, bottom and side pieces or just the top piece?

2) also not sure if you answered this but can i add plywood and trim to it in the future or would i have to take the tank down?

3) have any pics of your stand? reefcentral is way to slow to go through all your posts atm :spin2:
