DIY Stands Template and Calculator

All, great and easy to design here. I'll be building a stand for a 72" x 24" x 30" tank with 2x8 and was wondering did all of you include an additional space? I just want the stand to be 30" for easy access. Example.

Stand = 74" x 26" x 34"
Tank = 72" x 24" x 30"

or should it be:

Stand = 72" x 24" x 34"
Tank = 72" x 24" x 30"

I built the stand about 1/2 inch more than the actual tank dimensions-just to allow for some error-last thing I want is to put the tank up and it not fit properly...

Reefer2727: I bought some birch 1/2" plywood for the sides and will cut some triangles from scrap to put on the back corners. These are all just for extra stability. Although, today it seemed pretty strong as is. I hope to have that all cut and in place along with a bottom tomorrow night so I can paint the innards this weekend.

For the final dressing, I will use poplar planks for the front and dress up the sides. I am thinking of painting the outside a flat/eggshell black currently... will see.

After reading the whole thread, I did not gather that there is a consensus on putting a plywood top on it or not for tanks with rims/braces. I am pretty sure the foam is not recommended, but would a plywood top be OK or recommended?

Anyone have a site to order doors from? I tried www.cabinetdoorsandhardware.com, but they did not have any simple/non-stained doors in the style I want which I could paint up. Looking for a unfinished door like: Door

Thanks for the site... looks promising. Will call them in a day or two when I have a firm plan for sizes.

Frame Assembly question...

Frame Assembly question...

When assembling the upper and lower box frames....should the crossbraces (supports for under sump tank) be included in the initial glueing and screwing and clampin of the box? Or should they be slipped in and secured after frame has set?

Going to get lumber today!

Another assembly question: once I have the top and bottom frame built, how do I keep the pieces in place before I glue/screw them? Bottom frame and then the vertical 2X4s and then the top most frame? I don't have a clamp that long, if I did, it would have been a lot easier. How do I do it wihtout using a clamp? There's got to be an eaiser way, other than asking someone to hold the verticals while I nail the screw :-)

Once I have the doors on mine, I'll be all set! If I had it to do over again, I would have gone a few inches taller. And here is a link to my build thread, in case anyone is interested:

" If I had it to do over again, I would have gone a few inches taller. "

That's exactly what I thought the first time. So I took it apart and rebuilt it 6" higher. With using this plan it's easy to take the "legs" out and redo it.

Made my cuts today. WHen assembling the upper and lower frames. Should i gule, screw and clamp with the crossbraces in the boxes? Or add them later. Probably doesnt matter?

My question is the same as Aravindk.

Once the 2 frames are assembled, how do you keep the uprights in place before screwing and glueing? Do I need a clamp to do it right?

I am working on my first DIY stand so I'm no expert but this is what I did. I built the top and bottom frame and then installed the vertical supports onto the bottom. Once they were in place, I installed the top frame. Here are a couple pics to show how I did it.

Installed the vertical pieces.

Then placed the top frame on and glued/screwed in place.

Hope that helps.

i assembled the top & bottom frame & the legs. then i took a large piece of 3/4" mdf & laid it on the ground. placed 2 legs flat on the mdf & attached the top & bottom, flipped it over & repeat the other 2 legs

Nice thread and thank everyone for the time spent. Rocket or anyone have a design for a tech 120? Plumbing in the way. Would be very sweet if you also had your 21 piece dimensions, so I can just have it all cut. Thanks in advance.
