DIY Stands Template and Calculator

puggsli1,

From what I read. First question glass or acrylic. If glass no top sheet is needed, just make sure the edges are framed. You don't need 2x6 a 2x4 will work for less than 48 inches. I still have not heard a good answer about the sides. I don't think they are structural. Rocket can I get a firm answer here? Thanks! I did a similar design and the side are attached with heavy duty velcro and are made from luan (however that is spelled) plywood witch is 1/4 inch thick.

The tank will be glass and rimless no euro bracing. I thought you can only leave the top off the stand if it is a plastic braced glass tank.

If it is glass and rimless with no plastic bottom rim, you need a plywood top for the tank to sit on. The only tanks that do not need this would be the ones with the black plastic rim on the bottom which raises the glass off the bottom.

As well you will need so sort of foam (styrofoam) under the tank between the tank and the plywood to balance out the weight and compensate for any imperfections on the plywood top.

This is mine, for a 120X62X55 braceless, rimless tank. Center brace on stand is just to hide the seam when the doors slide closed (there is a 3 mm gap and I don't want to see the light through it), not structural.

Thanks teacher you live up to your name. I have never had a rimless, and for some reason I thought it was only the top that was rimless. But I guess rimless means no rims even on the bottom:lol:

reefermad619, height isn't really a limiting factor. The 2X4 uprights are 10 times stronger then necessary to support the tanks we typically put on these types of stands. Just make sure that you support the stand all around to give it a nice stable support. If you shim, put shims along the entire side, not just in the corners. Cedar shakes are cheap and a bundle will last you and your kids.

Thanks Rocket. I figured I would also get some brackets and attach to the wall it will be in front off.

Well my stand is mostly completed.

With flash shows the grain of the oak.

Without flash is a more accurate representation of the color.

I am about to tackle building my own stand for my new 65g. Quick question: Do you generally build the stand about an inch longer and deeper then the tank to try to center the edges of the tank on the 2"x4"s? For example: My tank is 36"x18", should I build the stand 37"x19"?

Anyone? Thanks.

That is really up to you I think. If you have an internal overflow, you may need the little bit of extra room my centering it so that the bulkheads do not hit the 2x4 frame of the top of the stand...if that made sense. If it is not drilled, then it sitting flush all the way around the edge of the stand would not be any problem....AS LONG as all of the tank frame is on top of the braces and not hanging over any.

That makes great sense. The tank is drilled with an over flow, so I think I will go an extra inch in all directions, just for the wiggle room.

Thanks Joe.

Knocked this guy out for my new 65g today. Framed with 2x4's, skinned in 3/4" Birch, rounded corners with 3/4" corner round trim, and the top trimmed with 3 pieces random molding.

I am just not sure how I should finish it. I dont think I want to stain it, and I am not sure what to paint it with. The truck bed liner lookg what be pretty cool, but I am not sure how to give it that look. Or maybe something two tone...black with white trim?

Any advice or opinions?

Also, sorry for the multiple post...can't seem to get all my thoughts/questions out at once.

I cant seem to find anywhere that has premaid cabinet doors. Any idea where to find them? I am thinking of just using more 3/4" birch for the doors and some nice autoclosing flush mount hinges. Have you seen anyone do it...how did it look?

No problem, thanks again for these plans. I found the doors in the cabinetry section of Menards. They have 3 different styles, and three different sizes, ranging from 12-36 dollars.

nice job Ryan! Glad to see you found the thread!
Yea, no idea why I haven't posted on here before, when I'm not on TCMAS, I'm on here.

I posted this one page ago.

hmmm....I have never heard of menards, and there is none in my area. I tried lowed and home depot. I guess I will try just calling around.

Oversized stand for a 75 gallon

Oversized stand for a 75 gallon

Wow when I found this thread I thought to myself this is exactly what I was looking for. A nice simple design that appears easy enough to do given what I have built in the past. But after almost 6 hours of reading I feel more lost than when I began. I have a typical glass 75 gallon (L48 1/2 x W18 1/2 x H21 3/8). After reading all the posts I would like to build a stand that is L66 x W24 x H40. I would like to do this with the tank sitting centered front to back. Hope that makes sense. Is there a way to do that without using supports that would take up the extra space underneath for the sump and equipment. I have been racking my brain for the last couple of hours trying to figure this out.

+1 If you have an internal overflow, it would make it easier for you to work on it if you move the back frame back a bit.

DustnF,

If your married, ask your wife. I'm sure she has already picked out a color/finish!! LOL Thats how mine turned out. LOL :lolspin:

Based on our "home decor", we went with a red oak stain and a semi gloss finish. It turned out nice. Speaking of nice, your stand turned out nicely. I like the molding.

haha...being single ftw. I like the idea of stain, but I have alot of puttying and sanding to do in order to get all my molding blended like I want and I am afraid stain would show it all. Maybe a grey base, with black trim....something modern.

Filled and sanded everything today and threw on its first coat of primer.

I am still not sure about the final paint. I either want it all black or two tone, one of which is black...lol. I think it would look good with the black silicon, black background, and black light. I could do the piano black finish, but it is incredibly time consuming.
