Do you earthquake proof your tanks?

I had a 50 gal salt tank (fish only of course) during the 1971 Sylmar earth quake. It was made out of 3/4 ply (fiber-glassed) with a glass front. I had Plexiglass over the top and it stood on several cinder blocks. just lost a couple inches of water no damage.....the pool on the other hand lost a couple feet of water..:debi:

I dread the thought of another quake.....

Do not bolt tanks to the wall. Look at the stands those tanks are on in the video. They have absolute zero cross bracing... they have 4 independent legs that aren't even tied together at the floor...

My thoughts exactly, that was a terrible example of a quake/tank test, and also does not show how a framed floor and wall flex towards and away from each other since it was on a solid platform.

I had a rocket engineer style stand under my 180 when the Easter day quake hit Mexico and SD in 2010. Got a 4" wave rolling across the tank and lost about 5 gallons off each end. It never bucked up off the ground though just back and forth. I was more worried about getting electrocuted than the tank. If you do bolt to a wall don't bolt directly, rather use chain or wire so it can move 4-6", just not fall over.
