Do you think this frag is worth $200?

Jason Fox and Tyree have made corals like this expensive just by putting their names on it. I personally don't care if its a super mega crusher super sunset big bang nova anything. When you start throwing those kind of names on coral you take away from the coral. If your coin to buy a coral buy it because you like it not because of its name. Do you intend to sell frags of this coral down the road?

I would never pay that much money for a coral....That's truly insane. It actually makes me angry that someone is that greedy. This hobby is more than having a fish tank in the living room cause it looks pretty... IMO, it's to teach us the beauty of the oceans and reefs. It should make us want to preserve the wild reefs. I rarely pay over ten dollars for a coral, and I will let my couple of corals fill the tank in the way they want to. Not with tons of frags everywhere. When I finally frag my corals, I will practically give them away to people who see the hobby the way I do...I'm in the hobby because it fascinates me, not because I'm looking to make money. Corals have names so that you can identify them and research them, not so you can put a several hundred dollar price tag on them. I'm done with my rant.

The problem is not necessarily with the names. The problem is with the price$.
The name is just the second tag to keep the game more interesting and to add a magic to the market. The name helps the people to get caught on the snow ball of more people getting caught and so they can buy THAT "special/limited edition". Name = hook.
So sad...
People will get caught on this and no matter what we do it's not going to reduce nor to end with the game, as long as people are willing to participate and pay the price.
Once they began, they will continue and probably it will get wor$$$e!!!

Once more... if they are happy... what to do? Gotta respect and just watch for now.

It is disgusting to watch what's going on now.

I sure can understand the higher prices when colorful/unusual conies are found and brought to the market.
I agree with the fragging of the colonies and holding of those special species for many to enjoy.
I just can't put up with the instant fragging of wild colonies with the dishonest instant high prices and cartoon names.

The newbie are coming to the hobby and they think that's the "normal" thing because they don't know better and won't fight for the real deal.

1/2" to 1" frags for sale?!
They hardly can survive shipping sometimes.

About selling the coral down the road... normally by the time you can frag and sell, the price will be down already.
Many will think like you: they'll buy to sell later too.
It's gonna be late, my friend.
They'll have more interesting and colorful frags for you to try it again.

I just figured that the names helped.

I don't think the name issue is much of the problem. I doubt 1 in 100 people even buys a coral because of the name. The issue is that the best looking corals have been named and people talk about them because they are cool looking. Most of the boring brown (I know I just offended many people) zoanthids/palys that are out there are not named, because nobody cares about them. They do not make a person look at the tank and think, wow, how beautiful. People are willing to pay the high price because the availability of these nicer looking corals is low. Take purple hornets for example, I have yet to see one in a shop. Online you can buy them though, at very high prices. I honestly don't even think they are one of the best looking out there. They are neat with the fine green ring, but you can find better for that price. But if you want something that every joe under the sun doesn't have, there you go. Can you really blame somebody for wanting to find a good looking coral? I would love to find some softball sized amazing colored colonies for sale for $10 but that ain't happening.

The name is the hook.
By the name the people can find the bait on the hook, to get caught.
It just helps the snow ball to roll...

I have to respectfully disagree with you on this one. IF that were a true statement, one would not be able to go to the zoa ID sites, and find multiple examples of common green button polyps with fancy names, like Green Implosions. Further, one would not see newbies who got taken in trying to sell single polyp frags of those same common "named" button polyps for big $$$. Unfortunately, you can find lots of examples of both if you look.

Maybe I should try an experiment (I may indeed be wrong in my analysis). I will try and find the most boring brown polyp I can, then submit a name to Coralpedia and call it "Super Ultra Chocolate Chip or something stupid like that and see how long it takes to see them pop up on Ebay or the internet for high dollar. I don't think the name will fool anybody, they will still be common, and not brightly colored with little contrast which is what I believe is what would make any polyp demand high dollar.

Sorry, they won't bite it!
It needs to be a beautiful "special edition" or something like that...
Then the name helps the $now ball.

Frag a frag??

Isn't that the normal practice now in reefing when one gets a hold of " THE NEW IT CORAL " get it to grow as fast as you can, frag the frag when a couple new pieces grow so that one is able to sell it for the going price ASAP before the price drops and there are more pieces available??? Then allows you to buy another costly " New IT coral " then continue the process over and over??? JUST SAYIN

Question: Do you think this frag is worth $200?

Answer: It's worth whatever you're willing to pay for it. ;) If you like them and are willing to pay the price, then go for it. The seller probably has some wiggle room in the price, it never hurts to ask. Worst they can say is no.

thats what i always say it cost what ever one is willin to pay like when i post up a f/s thread people will pm tellin me that zoa cost less and the one for less cost more prices also vary in different areas out west a zoa that goes for 100pp may not be going for 100 on the east coast just food for thought

It still cost someone, somewhere, originally, only a couple bucks......

More food for thought.

I don't think original price has anything to do with the current value. If you found a Porsche for sale for $5 and you get it, does that mean that you can only sell it for $6? My vote is that you can sell it for whatever fair market value is for it, whether that is $6 or $60,000 doesn't matter.

Somebody may have only paid $5 for it, but I have not found that source and have not been able to find amazing polyps for that cheap anywhere, so maybe I could fly to one of these islands or reef areas, pay some natives to allow me to dive on their reef and get some corals, but then how many thousand am I spending to do that?

Around these parts (arkansas) we look at you real crazy if you come talking about zoas more than 15 or 20 bucks a frag and I'm not talking about 2 to 8 polyps.
