Dream fish

Well shoot. Guess I'll be doing another water change to reduce the toxic effects of the Prime. [emoji849]

Ammonia has shown up in both of my QT tanks. I did a small water change but was wondering if I can use prime to reduce it along with the water changes?

Which copper med are you using? Generally, you DO NOT want to do this. Prime is essentially a reducing agent and can change cupramine from the relatively safe Cu2+ form to the much more toxic Cu+ form. That is not a good thing.

50% water changes done. I think I'll do one more and then dose the cupramine back up. Opinions?

yes, that should be good or you can do another large water change while adding the proper amount of copper to the new water being added. This way the copper level should stay in the therapeutic level and doesn't drop. If the levels drop, the clock resets for the treatment.
You can get a bucket, measure how much water it can hold, make fresh water and add the proper amount of copper to it and then you can use that for all the water changes. This way you have the right amount of concentration for your water changes making it much easier.

From my research water changes carefully dosed with additional copper is the only way to reduce ammonia safely. Feeding in small portions and immediately siphon out any uneaten food also helps to keep ammonia under control.

I can't believe all this for one fish. Just throw it in the tank. It's more stressful with all those changes. It probably passed through at least 4 tanks before it got to you.

please do some research before saying such random things.

Well when I get my Achilles tang for my new set up am not doing all that. That's just extras if you ask me. Ick is caused by stress all the is extra stress

Ich is caused because it's brought in with the fish. The stuff doesn't just show up out of thin air. Hate to say this but you won't ever have a Achilles because the one you get will always die of Ich because apparently you don't QT which may have worked thus far but won't for a Achilles. You're going to do what you want but stop giving others bad advise

You should refrain from giving advise if you are this ignorant about how life works. Ich doesn't just appear out of no where. It's a living organism, spontaneous generation is not a thing. For a fish notorious for being difficult, sounds like you will end up with a dead one. Too bad...

Ok if you say so New guy. Your new to this. I have over 20 years of salt water under my belt. I can do this in my sleep with the basics of equipment. Because as much as you guys post you don't have the basic knowledge of the husbandry.

I so love when people say ignorant things, and their only backup is "I have more experience than you".

Alright there, cowboy, take a deep breath and realize where you are. We're discussing fish and coral here, no need to have a chip on your shoulder. Share what you know, or don't, but check the attitude at the door.

** cough ** i run a fish store and have almost the same time under my belt. EVERYWHERE online says expert only and a true qt. You can do and say whatever you want but experice and thousands of other reefers disagree with your views.

just like the clams you claim dont survive from fish stores, or the elegance corals...We frag elegance corals weekly and certainly havnt written one off in mths.

The large wild Caught clams don't survive Clams die slowly ( you should know that) just because it don't die in your store doesn't mean it won't die. Plus since you have a store you know when buy most of those fish there In a separate system that already has copper. You have a store all you care about is turn over. (Profit) If it dies live you already double what you bought it for. If the fish is harvest in desirable condition it's survival rate In increased. If it stressed through out it's transport it will get sick and most likely die. Am happy you can frag elegance that's my next coral I will try once again. I blame the why it was Harvest not my tank. Plus store keep there salinity super low as to prevent ich. Save me your soap box

Also the biggest problem is people aren't creating ecosystems for there tanks there to much in a rush to dump chemicals in there tank. To solve a problem.

FACTS:
I have 24 years of saltwater experience
The tank has been up and running for about two years
I’ve raised 5 Achillies tangs to the point that they got to big for their tanks and ended up selling them
I’ve done my research
I use Reefcentral for knowledge not conflict
I spent months tracking down an importer that would send the Fish directly to me to minamize “stress”
I specifically chose a small Achellies for several reasons
1. I want the fish to be around for a long time
2. Due to the size of my QT tanks
I’ve had the fish now for a week in copper and it suffered no ill effects other than appetite suppression
I made the mistake when I was younger and didn’t know better to not QT fish.
Lesson learned.

You sure don't sound like someone who has 20 years experience, and husbandry has nothing to do with Ich. I do actually have 20 years experience in this hobby next month to be exact. Good luck with your Achilles
