drummereef's 180g in-wall build

UPDATE:

So I've decided to regroup... After spending 3 years attempting to "fix" the mistake I made by starting the tank with Marco Rock - constant battles with Dinoflagellates etc - something's gotta change. I'm fully confident there's something toxic deep in the rock that I can't test for and ultimately cannot fix. I've lost multiple fish over the last few years and now many corals battling this issue, and frankly I'm fed up. Myself and a few others that started their tanks around the same time using Marco Rock have all had similar issues, so I'm definitely not alone.

That said, the plan is to maintain the tank until the fall and then replace the display rock and sand with new "real" live rock. I'll keep everyone posted but that's the story. Sorry for the lack of updates lately, hope you all understand...

I'd do the same thing, Brett. Good luck!

You will be happy with the redo. Plus you will have some nice bigger corals to re aquascape.

Sometime I feel like taking all my corals and rock out, rearranging and then putting back in for a "change of scenary" hahaha

It will be a simple change that will make your setup all the better!!

I want to say I have followed your build since the beginning. I've never chimed in until now as I haven't felt the need to until now. When I read you were ready to give up I was pretty bummed. This entire thread could be put on paper, bound, and sold to a publisher and hobbyists would buy it. Your ideas, your builds, and the execution on them has inspired me with my tanks. I just filled my newest, 40B, with water this past Sunday and am agonizing over the aquascape currently. :)

When I read you will battle forward and keep going, I was pretty stoked. Glad to hear it and I'll be looking forward to more updates.

Brett, could you please post a pic of your refugium ?
Need yo see how those macros grew in this time.

Won´t mind if you post other pictures as well LOL

Brett,
I have been following your jurney for long time now and always have been amazed with your finesse and tounch you give this hobby. I am not much of a post maker here on these forums, but I follow alot of, if one might call it, masters. I do believe you have a gift and you will bounce back beautifully. for the past few months that I have following your thread I have been feeling your pain since I myself went through a horrific incident in the same way you have experience. the only difference was, that I had bought 130# of reef saver rock and that is how started my 180 gal. reef. within a few months after cycle, I started experiancing the same problems with dinos that you experience with. I tryed everything from culture bacteria to 50% water changes to 3 days of no lights, with no solutions. so started suspecting on the rock.( i wish I was a computer whiz to show you some of the photos and videos a still have from that MESS. So one day, 6 months ago I decided to start all over, with fresh fiji live rock and new sand. the rock was cycle for 3 months and the sand was cured for 10 weeks separately( to avoid clumping from a new tank syndrome). so my friend, there is light at the end of the tunnel I know cause it has work for me. my system looks fresh and clean, with the ocasional algea spots that my cleaning crew has no problem taking care of. so be patience and smile and enjoy our hobby.

If I had never run across (and actually read this "bible" of a build), the single best part of my build would've never happened. I've done a few things different but thank you so much for the manifold!

I've got about 160lbs of marco and 30 lds of live.My tank is only 5 months old.Now I'm scared that it will suffer the same fate.I currently don't have the issues that yours does though.Guess I'll keep an eye on it for now.:uhoh3:

Thanks guys. I truly appreciate the kindness and support. I will be updating the tank in due time. Fish are all doing great despite the massive coral loss. I'll keep you posted if you stay subbed. :D

Wow, yet another victim... so sorry to hear your tank issues but glad you were able to rebuild successfully. Where did you get your Fiji rock, Tristan?

Ha! With the intermittent dino blooms I haven't been able to keep any macros long term Vlado. There's just something either toxic or a nutrient imbalance in the system, the macros either get covered in dinos or just melt over the course of a few months. Totally weird, but what about my tank isn't weird... LOL! :)

Knock on wood you'll be fine. There's plenty of tanks out there that started with a combination of dry and live rock that are perfectly healthy. Mine, however, was started with 100% dry rock which I think was a major player in it's lack of success long term. There were periods where the tank looked phenomenal but it lacked a "buffer" for when problems would arise. That's what I want to address in phase 2. ;)

Why not stay subbed??

I am not going any where... neither is my tank. It does not have wheels and the inhabitants do not have passports to leave the tank. LOL

Anyone that has looked at my webcam has seen the GHA kick back up. I got my rock from BRS. But I know I should have cooked it, but thought it was not 'going to be me'...

Yeah. I am fighting it too.

I just did three days lights out too and scrubbed for like 3 hours yesterday. Looks much better.

My Algae Turff Scrubber is working overtime and all!

Brett, are you still using the bio pellets, if so I would change to another form of carbon dosing, one that you can control the amount of carbon source in the system,...
I have a friend that had for the longest time had the same problem, and completely by luck he removed the pellet reactor to clean the pump, the pump fell and died, so he ordered an pump, in the meantime he started using vinegar, instead of bio pellets...very low quantities to start...one week later all of the dynos , briopsis, and cyano was almost gone. One month later it was all gone, and i mean gone...His theory was that they were all feeding on the extra carbon available from the pellets...

Last I spoke to him he uses vinegar 15 ml daily, and zeo bak weekly.no more problems. Just saying. Good luck!!!
Love the attention to little details....

I got mine through local fish store owner friend of mine. he got me 150 lbs. premium fiji live rock ,that's a total 3 boxes 50 pounds ea. the boxes were label with walter smith label or something like that. Im pretty sure you can find good deals on live rock through the internet or maybe a local fish store you can trust. good luck

Good luck Brett. I know all about the hair algae, all to well. Are tanks were started around the same time with the same rock. Financially starting over is not an option for me so I'm toughing it out. I scrubbed a ton of rock and am keeping up on my water changes. Went back to dosing MB7. Every thing is looking decent right now, even kept a birdsnest for a couple weeks now. Don't give up your tank has always given me and many others hope. Keep us updates.
