drummereef's 180g in-wall build

whatchya running on the back wall there....you have the vortech on the sides right?

Yep, Vortech's on the sides and Tunzes in the back. Flow in the tank consists of...

Dart Return - 900-1000 gph
2x Vortech MP40w - up to 6400 gph (currently running in lagoon mode)
2x Tunze 6025 - 1320 gph

Total max flow with the Vortechs running full out would be approx 8620 gph. :)

UPDATE:

Took a few RAW shots with the camera tonight. Came out with one or two decent FTS. Probably the best color representation yet.

Looks great. I'm glad at least one of us can keep fish alive...:sad1:

Thanks Green. I know how it feels believe me, been there a few times myself. Give it some time and I'm sure your tank will flourish.

Love it!!! I am excited to see corals added, when do you think you will?

Thank you skimace7. :) I'm hoping pretty soon, like in the next couple weeks. Just want to make sure the algae is gone for good and I'm all set. :)

UPDATE:

Tonight was a good night. I snapped a couple pics of Mr. Tang eating. He's apparently regained his appetite and was voraciously going after the Nori tonight. I soaked it in a little Selcon before I put it on the clip so it attracted a little visitor as well. Here's the pics. :)

UPDATE:

Got a more accurate reading of NO3 and PO4 tonight. I guess now that the bulk of the algae is gone the Hanna Checker is starting to pick them up. These tests were done shortly after feeding so it might be a little skewed since I fed Rod's tonight. I'll re-test tomorrow before I feed in the evening and see if I get different results.

Current readings are:

PO4 - 0.03 ppm Hanna Photometer
NO3 - 0.2 ppm Salifert

Those are perfect numbers to grow colorful sticks IMO... are they not?

I'm thinking of giving ecoBak a try, but the only gain for me is stopping the use of GFO. Do you think i would be able to pull it out altogether (gradually)? I am a heavy feeder.

Yes, I think those are good numbers for growth and color. We shall see... :) I would overlap the use of GFO and ecoBAK until you see the ecoBAK start to kick in. Could be in the range of 4-6 weeks on an established reef tank. Once the ecoBAK starts to reduce N and P I would pull the GFO. If the P starts to rise over a few weeks then you can always put it back online but the ecoBAK is generally used to replace that media. I would run GAC 24/7 along side either the ecoBAK or GFO regardless. :)

UPDATE:

Re-tested PO4 with the Hanna Checker a few minutes ago and it read 0.00 ppm. So I'm going to say the oil in the Rod's Food I feed last night had some traces of PO4 that were causing it to read on the previous test. There you have it! :)

Did you add any bacteria culture to the tank to go along with the ecobak pellets?
How long has the ecobak been running?
gotta get one of those hanna checkers...

Hi Henry, I did not use any bacteria starters with the ecoBAK. I was advised by Jon at Warner that it wasn't necessary as there is plenty of bacteria already in the system to culture the pellets. He also mentioned that he doesn't completely trust the various bacteria manufacturers out there simply because they won't list what's exactly in the bottle. I can see his point there... :) The Hanna Checker is awesome btw. You'll really like it compared to the standard test kits. Not even comparable to the Salifert kit imo. ;)

Very sweet tank! Looks like you put alot of hard work into it and man did it pay off!!

Thanks marc! :)

UPDATE:

Was bored so what better fun than to take pics of some nasty skimmate. Check out those bubbles! :)

Marco Rock is looking like "live rock" more and more each day. Algae continues to recede, but making small steps of progress. The purple stuff on the right side of the rock is a sponge I think. There's still a little cyano here and there too.
