drummereef's 180g in-wall build

:hmm4:

i almost never get on RC anymore but i was looking for some inpiration to get me movitatd enougt to get my little 75 stuckin the wall here at home. im sure glad i ran into this thead!

i found what i was looking for... :inlove:

well done brett!!!

Not sure if the GFO does anything else other then remove phosphates but I too have witnessed the change in behaviors for the better when adding GFO to my tank. I have also just learned that you can add freshwater maracyn and increase circulation to stop cyno in it's tracks. I haven't tried this yet but several people swear by it.

I'll look into that reeftank. I've heard about using maracyn but haven't researched it enough. I know lots of people have good luck with Chemiclean. I've never used that either although I'm contemplating it.

I just wanted to say this is a great build. I will be stealing some of what you did for my 120 build. Keep up the great work.

Thank you zmckenzie. :)

I've always found some of my inverts, esp snails, respond to high nutrients in a tank, way before the fish. They could've been stressed, maybe, by the high phosphates? Just guessing here. Good news tho!

Good observations bheron. I'm guessing the GFO is absorbing whatever toxin the algae is letting off. It's just strange they would act this way when the PO4 is bound in the rock and not free in the water column. At least that's what I presume since my test kits all read 0 PO4.

Thanks chrismunn. Good luck with your in-wall project. :)

Lookin good Drummer! I don't suppose you know if there is a similar app and capability for a Samsung Moment on the Sprint network?

Unfortunately I do not know. Maybe try looking up apps for that phone and see what you can find. I know this particular app was made by Nullriver.

awesome app!

now lets see some coral already!

I know, tell me about it...! :D The algae seems like it's getting weaker by the day now so hopefully soon I'll feel confident enough to start making the first additions. I'll get some pics of the rock up soon for everyone to see the progress.

Hats off to your patience

And I thank you for your patience in this incredibly boring thread at the moment. Things are looking better Eric but it's definitely taken some wind out of the sails. I can see progress but didn't think it would take quite this long. :strange:

Brett boring is in the mind of the reader your tread is anything but boring. In fact I wish more people in this hobby took more time. I have read far to many threads where they over stock so fast there system crashes and 75% of their animals end up in the trash can, that's not going to happen with you! Mike

i agree - in this hobby, taking it slow pays off in the long run

Thanks for the encouragement guys! :) The algae is getting better on the rocks. Just a tiny patch left on one rock but there's still a little cyano fuzz happening. There's still quite a bit of brown hair-like algae on the sand bed but I'm trying to siphon as much as I can. It's difficult because of the way it clumps the sand together.

Dude one word FLAWLESS!!!!. Just absolutely amazing work you have done with this build man. This is the first thread of builds that i have actually sat down and went through the whole thing took me about 2 hrs or so to go through it. First you def put a new meaning to the word perfect in perfection and secondly I think you have open a new section on RC called tank build of the month (TBOTM) imo. Cause dude you def deserve TBOTM . Very impressive build two thumbs up if i had more i would put them up too  But I will keep an eye on this thread for upcoming updates. And good luck with the algae problem man. And most importantly thinks for the fine details, information, and pics as well has been awesome documentation for myself and all other viewers lurking this thread :D. Have a good one and happy reefing.

hey brett
I downloaded that google sketchup that you used on this build. I got like three different ones that it downloaded. They was the sketch up 8, layout 3 and style builder 2. Not sure if that is what you have but if it is, could you link me towards where you got all that 3D piping and skimmer and stuff like that at. I can't seem to find none of that stuff within the program. Would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance :D

I 3rd that it will really pay off in the long run. You will have a rock solid foundation to work with..

Thanks Eric. :)

I used Google Sketchup for my build designs. Go under the File Menu and choose 3D Warehouse, Get Models. That will take you to the repository of custom designs people upload. From there you can search for specific things you are looking for like PVC, Valve, Pump, etc... Sometimes the more general the search the better if you can't find what you're looking for at first. Hope this helps. :)

Brett I am going on a 2 week vacation and need to set up a ATO I want to know what you think about the Tunze Osmolator you have? I read on Oldude's thread that the Tunze would shut down after 10 minutes and did not reset. Does the Tunze need to be reset by hand(a hand that won't be here) for I will be gone? I will have a friend feed etc. but I am trying to reduce the friends work load so I need a good ATO. Thanks for the help. Mike

he's got blame for my electrical system as well. I never thought I would bother routing cords in conduit on the walls.

Ha! Funny stuff =)

Looking at build threads is normally a great thing, you can tell yourself that you are on par with a lot of people, and then you see some builds that make you feel like you just mounded up some mud and called it your reef....

I'm not familiar with Oldude's review of the Osmolator but I can tell you mine has work flawlessly since I put it on the system. No resetting, no nothing... just let it run. It's an awesome top-off device. The only thing I would recommend especially if you are putting it on last minute, before your trip, is to soak the optical sensor in 100% vinegar for a day. This will remove the residue on the plastic so bubbles won't attract to the sensor. They all will attract bubbles at first but the vinegar soak will drastically reduce the risk of the sensor "sticking" on. :)

DrummerReef: I blame you for my plumbing OCD on my current build. Just thought you should know :P

Haha, sorry about that WhoDey64. :D

 Your system is looking great crvz. :)
