drummereef's 180g in-wall build

I think I understand now, at least enough! :) Thank you.

Beautiful coral shots. Gorgonians are fascinating, but I've always been concerned that they may hinder the option of having a lot of flow in certain areas of the tank. Do you find this to be a problem in your case?

Thanks! Good thought on the gorgonian and flow. Right now it's located in a fairly open area of the tank and it's not very large. I plan on keeping it fragged fairly small as I could see it hindering flow if it's directly in front of some corals. Definitely something to keep in mind depending on your aquascape. :)

growth looks great!

Thanks 110! :)

That slimer threw up a whole branch in a month? Thats crazy awesome growth!

Not exactly. :D I think in the first shot the 3rd branch was hidden behind the large branch in the pic. The way it's mounted now I was able to get a decent pic of the whole frag. The longest branch has grown maybe 1/4" over the last month I'm guessing. I'll try and get some more pics tonight of some of the other corals in comparison. :)

UPDATE:

More coral pics for you! :) I'm trying to identify a couple of these (marked as "unknown") so if you know please chime in. If my ID's are wrong please correct me. ;)

great growth pics, just wondering what salt you are using and any additives, or feeding of the SPS. They seem to be growing fast!! awsome.

Well I am probably the 20th person to say this but your attention to detail is truly inspiring. :)
Subscribed along for the ride. (kinda late)

I'm continuing for now to use IO salt. I might do a 50/50 mix of IO and Seachem in the future but haven't completely decided. I have an order in for some Zeo products but haven't dosed anything yet. The corals have only been indirectly feed when I feed my fish so far. I will update when I get them. :)

Never too late Trex! Thank you for the kind words. ;)

UPDATE:

My Hanna Alkalinity Checker came today. I've been using the Phosphate Checker for a while now and really like their products. Quick, easy, no mess with fussy reagents, and accurate results.

There has been some discussion in the Hanna Forum about the supplied syringe tip. Some complain the tip doesn't seal to to the syringe correctly and can trap bubbles etc... I found it to work OK so your mileage may vary. I tested both ways, using the supplied tip and without. The difference in tests was nominal and could have been human error for that matter.

I tested this against my Salifert Alkalinity test kit. Salifert Alk tests are know to read high, which is widely discussed in different venues - up to 1.5dkh higher vs other popular tests. My result were right in line with this discussion. For reference my Salifert kit was bought just a couple weeks ago and is the latest version, pink syringe tip.

My results are as follows:

Hanna Checker 7.84 (with tip)
Hanna Checker 7.73 (no tip)
Salifert Test Kit 8.3

sweet checker. I want to order one up soon too!

So if i am getting a low 8 reading w/ my salifert, then I am more like mid to high 7's.
I guess I should stop lowering my ALK!

Can't say for sure but from my experience, yes. :D It seems, across the board, people are getting more accurate results with the Hanna Alk Checker. This is crossed checked with other accurate kits like Elos and Tropic Marin. I think my Salifert days are officially over. ;)

UPDATE:

Water Change and Testing

I have a couple updates for you today. :) Performed my weekly water change but took some Alkalinity tests before/after to reference the new Hanna Alk Checker.

Before Change: 7.61
After Change: 7.89

This again was about an 11% change using IO salt. So even with the new Checker the test shows a nominal change in Alk after the water change.

Additive Dosing

My Korallen-Zucht Zeovit order came today. I ordered 250ml Coral Snow, 50ml ZEObak, and 50ml Amino Acid High Concentrate. From what I understand, the Coral Snow acts as a transport for the Amino Acid. It's formula is also know to reduce phosphate, neutralize acids, and increase water clarity.

My primary reason for dosing was to try the "Magic Brew" which is a blend of all three elements. So in theory it is supposed to reduce excess nutrient while also providing a direct transport of food for the corals and create more bacteria biodiversity.

I mixed up 9ml Coral Snow, 9 drops ZEObak, and 2 drops AAHC. Or, 1ml Coral Snow + 1 drop ZEObak per 25g of water. It mixes up as a creamy white slurry.

After dosing the tank quickly clouds which is normal. Water clarity is supposed to be excellent after the tank clears. I'll keep you posted on the progress. :)

Anxiously awaiting the experiences and reviews of this particular dosing program. Been considering the exact products myself and feel my corals need a "boost".

Although on the fence with Bio-pellets, I do run a 0 phos and near 0 nitrates through a beast of a skimmer and 20% weekly water changes. To that end I do feel my corals are "staved and I have been wanting to dose ZeoVit products for a while, so your experience with their products will help immensely.

Great job Brett and many thanks for ALL your hard work and sharing with us........

G'Day Brett

Have just started the Zeovit way as well. Day two now though just using the basic 3 for now....Bak, Food7 & Start 3....Have plumbed the Zeo rx and running carbon passively in the sump.......

Fingers crossed!

cheers
