i wanna soak my powerheads in bleach for a little to really give them a good cleaning and kill any algae on it (i'm afraid i see some bryopsis). and then soak it in freshwater and let it completely dry of course, kind of like filter socks.

is this a bad idea? will the bleach be harmful for the powerhead? i was planning on diluting the bleach anyways.

ideas? thanks!

Muratic acid and water 30/70% works better than vinegar
But I love vinegar since I dose some in my tank instead of vodka
So do you don't worry about drying it out :)

bleach wont hurt it for a short dunk, i usually dilute 50/50. Great for killing off algae and making sure that it's dead.

ok thanks so much guys!

maybe i'll do a combo, a quick dunk in bleach, and then longer in vinegar, and then a good rinse.

Justin Credible did a presentation talking about using hydrogen peroxide for algae. It works wonders. Dipping corals in it (very carefully), frag plugs, rocks that are covered with algae, etc. Try that and then soak them in a vinegar and water and you should be good to go.

**You might be able to you tube it.

Bleach will kill anything organic (i.e. green algae, bryopsis, etc.).
Acid such as vinegar will dissolve anything calcium carbonate based (i.e. coralline algae).

I've soaked pumps, rocks, frag plugs, magnet cleaners, and frag racks in both. Just make sure to rise well afterwards and you'll be ok. Note, don't mix the 2 together thinking that you can combine the best of both worlds. Doing so will create a toxic chlorine gas.

Use new bleach as well. If it has been sitting around for a few months, it's reactivity has dropped significantly.
