dvanacker's 200g SPS tank......

Hi Darryl,

Peeps are always looking for ways to reduce the electric bill by not using MH's for SPS.... If you were unable to use MH's would you give up on most SPS? I'm not convinced on solo LED. What would be a lighting and maximum tank depth configuration your experience says would work?

Awesome tank!

If I had to do it over I wouldnt use MH. Im with you on not fully trusting LED yet...Im close but not there. Problem is now I dont want to change up what is working for me and shock the established corals but if I had to do it over again it would probably be a mix of LED and T5HO.

In fact my buddy jroovers wanted to swap his dual 250 MH out and I help him decide on a T5HO and LED DIY set up. I put together the LED for him and it was just two 4ft aluminum U channel with 24 cree royal blue LED spaced down each one with 80degree optics. So he mounted 4 T5HO and alternated them with the LED stripes. He's had great success with this light....you can check his thread out here http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=21155739#post21155739

Looking awesome Darryl. I'm going to have to get some top downs soon enough, yours are terrific.

Yes, and I thank you greatly for your help! Soldering those LEDs myself likely would have been a disaster. :headwallblue:

Re-reading your thread (for the 100th time!)- looks like you have a sand bed in your sump in the earlier pictures. Did you do this to add the correct nutrient load for optimal color/health of SPS?

I do....I can't raise the lights but I cut the photoperiod to 5hrs from 8hrs on the metal halide and every month or two I bump it up an hour till I reach 8hrs again.

Very Very nice!!. About the best colours I have seen anywhere!.

Is that a Jedi Mind trick down there?.
Do you find it is sensitive to very high light levels?, or if you drop the phos too low?.

Thanks for the kind comments again guys....

Not really....I just added it to the sump so I wouldnt have to worry about detritus building up in there...since its on the ground it is very hard to siphon.

thanks. Like other montipora, it doesnt like to be moved around a lot and takes some time to acclimate but it seems to take a far amount of light. Not sure about the phos as I havent tested in a year or so.

Here are the last of my photo session....

I need to come up with a clever name for this one. Its a wild I had for years that did nothing good for me and than I gave it to jroovers and he coloured it up at which point I got a frag back....in high light and flow its a nice tabling acro. I love how the green confusa is growing around it...almost reminds me of a flower.

Yours is growing incredibly fast, certainly outpacing any growth I had with it. You must have found the sweet spot of really strong flow and light. I moved mine to my frag rack as with my rescaping I don't have a good spot for it up high and in lots of flow - I may have to change that as yours is looking spectacular!

Nice updated FTS by the way.

How about MRT Spaceman Spiff Hyacinthus? It is similar to red planet, but different... the spaceman spiff is a reference to Calvin's extra-planetry travels in a red flying saucer from the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip, one of my favorites as a kid. Kinda fitting I think.
