EcoTech Radion vs Aquaillumination Sol

All of this UV talk is interesting. Isn't harmful UV light production the reason you have to run glass covers on double ended HQI MH lighting? Is that a different type of UV, like A vs. B or something?

how many Radion's would it take to cover a tank

48" x 24" x 20"

and compared to how many AI SOL would it take?

They are different. The UV in the stunners is just ultraviolet light. You are getting on the very edge of what the human eye can see. UV in this case is about any light below the 420nm area. The ecoxotic UV is 403nm. It is very dim to the human eye but I know the corals can see it. They flouresce like crazy with just the UV stunner on. I am hoping to see what some more powerful UV chips can do.

haven't the time to read all of it tonight in short which is better? Really want to be sold on the ecotechs simply because I love the pumps I have now mp40's ecos x5 now to try their led's anyone have a sale running on these. also the AI Sol would be nice if they are A better unit I have an
Sps tank ...

I love the Radions for their RGB function and spread. I love the AI Sols for their penetration and PAR. But, I am realizing that its not always about PAR or being a PAR monster. I feel its how effective you are using these light. Their are success stories from either end. So, really its just boils down to preference and how you like your tank after you install the lights. My opinion of course.

If there was an easy or defined answer, we wouldn't have 200+ posts in this thread :lmao:

I have Sols, and they look great but I am sure that the Radion looks great as well.

I see radion in store they look perfect nice colour combination litle tu price , don't have any experience vith AI .

I'm subscribed to alot of LED threads right now and cant remember which one this was posted in, (so if this was already posted in this thread I apologize), but Vivid Aquariums has switched over to the Radions over alot of their tanks, including their frag tanks.

In fact in a picture I saw, they had Radions side by side with MH's, (cant remember what the wattage of the MH's was, but I want to say it was 400 Watt Radiums) and the Radions (LED) were holding their own against the MH's in both color and growth...

Ryan have you come across any studies showing the effects or usage by coral of UV light?

So what UV stunner strip are you and rtparty talking about? I must be missing it. The only thing I see on the Ecoxotic website is a 445nm blue. This is one of the strongest hit part of the spectrum generated by "white LED's" and supplemented by Blue and Royal Blue. You certainly don't need additional energy at this wavelength.

Do they have anything that hits the "Chlorophyll a" absorption line at 417nm. This might actually be useful for coral health. There is also an absorption line at 425nm which we just barely reach with "white LED's". All the other major active lines are nicely hit with both AI and Radion technology.

As far as coral health goes, the single color narrow LED's, like the red and green LED's used in the Radion aren't really useful at all. These are just to dial in an attractive color for us people, not really for the corals.

Ahh so that is my answer I am A Par Monster thanks for the quick breakdown the AI's have it?

Ok, I found some data sheets on the UV stunner. Yes, the 403nm LED that they use does hit the "Chlorophyll a" line at 417nm. This could be helpful for corals. We would need one of our bio experts here to chime in.

I find it interesting that there are a lot of comments stating "AIs look dull, flat, cold, dim" etc...I dont see it at all. I love the color i get from it. And im maxing out at 45%w,50%b,60%rb.I have one sol blue over my 24x24x18 cube and I love it. I have it 12" up and the spread with stock optics is just a little dimmer in the corners.. Oh well. I dont have corals there. All my rock work is at least 4" in from the sides anyways. My LFS here has 3 cube tanks set up for frags. A 60 cube,70 cube,90cube all next to each other tiered. 60 has 2 Radions, and he put 4 AIs over each of the other 2. They both look great. If I want a frag out of the Radion lit tank, when I get it home it more or less looks like it did at the store. I just feel saying the Sol looks cold or dull, is not a fact. That is your personal opinion.

No expert here but I noticed a difference in my corals when I added the UV stunner to my setup. Things plateaud though for me at some point. Since I added another pro module and have been increasing my photo period, things are looking a lot better than before.

+1

I love the look but a minor point for me is that yellow colored corals and fish don't look as vivid.

Just wanna bring this thread back to life, but with a small twist. Now that Kessil has dropped their A350, which is supposed to cover a full spectrum much better than these first 2, what are your thoughts on that?

I don't think the A350 has better spectrum than the Radion. I don't see any reds in their plots that they put out.

True, guess I mis-spoke. However, not having the warmer colors in the spectrum, and allowing for a greater coverage of the cooler blues, isn't that better, or more desirable? I mean, we all want the blues to help our corals color and grow.

I am buying 4 AI sols for my 72in 125 and also going to get 2 Ecoexotic RGB's so i can add whatever extra color I want. The RGB's also simulate cloud cover.
