Ecotech Vortech pumps

Bought two MP40s for my 120, they are amazing water movers! Fish and corals love it and yes they are an investment but you are getting what you pay for. Both of mine are very quiet...

I have used both the Tunze equivalent and the Ecotech MP40. Both extremely good pumps. You will not be disappointed, but if you are, the market for reselling them is pretty good.

I think the pumps are great, but they do require periodic maintenance (as do most of our reef equipment). When they get dirty, they get louder. I usually take one off-line at night to soak in vinegar to remove calcium deposits, then rinse and put it back on-line in the morning.

I recommend purchasing the maintenance kit from Ecotech, so you'll have it ready when you need it. One of my MP40s had a drive shaft fail, and I wish I had the parts ready for a quick replacement, especially since most LFS don't carry parts.

2 mp40s on my 100 and love them. They pull nicely from the bottom getting ll the gunk from under my scape. Couldnt be happier.

I really like the style of these pumps with the external motor, I'm looking at getting a couple of the MP10s myself, although all the comments I've read about the noise worries me a little. But, there are two other pieces of equipment on the list I have to get first before I upgrade my pumps ... maybe I'll get lucky and the prices will come down a bit between now and then.

Night mode you just hold down the first two buttons together until the lights blink differently, then push the first two buttons at the same time again. Night mode. They have great videos on their web site to tune a perfect wave even with just one driver.

I'm unimpressed with the amount of current that is being created with my mp10 in a 25" long tank 9" wide 15" tall (16g). It will make a small wave no problem but that is just it a very small wave. If the wave were larger then I would leave it on that mode and be happy. But I've started putting sps into the tank and the short pulse isnt cutting it.

I also am very very surprised at how short of a distance the current is strong. About 13" from the pump the current is very little. It barely moves the polyps on the sps. It does create a good undertow and wave action but just not enough for the money.

I was very excited about buying this pump and think I over hyped myself. Its functions work great and wouldnt want another pump just because of the software but I'm wanting more flow than what this little mp10 can provide in my 16g tank which is hard to believe after reading all the rave reviews!!!!! Just my opinion.

I will add that I think if the tank were just a little longer the pulse mode would work a lot better at creating the wave I want. It has to pulse really quickly since the tank is only 2' long.
