How do I catch this beast? He was just gnawing on coralline but this is too much. Is there a decent trap that I can DIY to trap him and give him away? He didn't eat it, just ripped it off and through it away.

borrow someones puffer fish.
you can easily make simple traps useing things from the craft store. a clear plastic box with lid, rig it so that you can pull it up right when the crab goes in. have it on its side with bait in it, string tied or glued to the edge and when he is inside, pull it up. if you can make some kind of door that can be triggered to close with a pull of a string then it should work better.
i have one now that im simply growing and will soon let him finish growing in my sump. i got him dirt cheap and the local fish store gives some good credit for huge emeralds

Do a search on emerald crabs in this forum. There are many reefers here who have posted some great info on EC's.

can you see the emerald crabs in the tank, ive had many over the years and theres not need to trap them they are very easy to pick right up. but if you insist on trapping them, you can get a butter bowl or a small plastic bowl and put some food in there. once they get in they wont be able to get out. just make sure that they can easily get in, put the bowl near a rock appx. the same height of the rock.

my emeralds were ripping up my zoos. i just cought them with a net and traded the little #$@% at my lfs.

yeah i would never put one in a reef tank because i have heard of horror stories like this but i would just catch him with my hand if u see him but if he's on a rock,go quick cause they lock themselves into a postion were u almost have to break there legs off to get them(but at this time thats probably not ur concern
