Etiquette or No?

Live in an Apartment complex and while taking the trash out and going down the stairs I could clearly see across the little courtyard what I knew had to be reef lighting coming from a first floor apartment. And, As whomever rents this place lives on the first floor, I walked by and had a peek and clearly saw an aquarium.. yes, I played it cool and did a glance but it was nice from what I saw.
Sooo. After all that, my question is would it be cool if I went and knocked on his door sometime and say, " Yo! Saw your lighting and knew it was a reef tank, I have one too" show me yours and I'll show ya mine?" approach?
I'M not shy, I'll do it. Looked like a softy tank to me, saw a bunch of tentacles and ****.[emoji3]

Yeah, I'd just strike up a convo and if they are comfortable with you coming in they will invite you.

Funny story, we have a lot of kids come by for Halloween, usually go through 50+ lbs of candy... This year one kid (probably 4 or 5) sees my coral/invert QT which is in the entrance of the house and says "ohhhhhh aquarium, where are there fish?" My girlfriend tells him "they're not in that one, they're in the aquariums down stairs". He says "ok" walks in and starts to go down the stairs . We laughed about it but quickly redirected him back to his parents. Told them to come back anytime for a tour :)

Heck when I was living in an apartment with my 125 people knocked once a week asking if I had a spaceship in my living room. I was always pleased to show off my corals. One time a cop that lived in the building walked by me and with a stern face said whatcha growing up there? When I said corals he just stared at me for a few seconds and replied neat...I love coral reefs!

It's like courtship. Be polite and considerate and invite them to yours (vs wanting to get in theirs). Ha ha ha... couldn't resist.

Actually, we're a weird bunch- reefkeepers. When we recognize one of our own, we're usually happy to connect.

You guys are neighbors. There is nothing wrong with introducing yourself and even mention that you saw the fish tank and you have the same interest in the hobby. Generally speaking, hobbyist like to share with others.

You don't even have to say you peeked in their window . . . you just recognized the color of a "reef-beacon" from afar.

I'd knock on the door!!!

I was in the Navy for over 13 years and no matter where I was, once I was settled off base I'd knock on any door close and when they answered the door just say "I hope I'm not bothering you, but I saw an actinic glow so had to stop and say hello" :) LOL, in my case it often turned out to be someone transferring soon and I gained another tank to pass on again myself though. I think I drove my Ex nuts.

we get some that kinda stuff at halloween too, but it is usually a parent we have to redirect.

I don't think I've met a reefer yet that did not like to show off their tank, at an appropriate time.
I would mention the obvious recognition of lights in passing, it's always good to have reefer friends close by, in case of emergency, and it's nice to know someone that actually gets what you are talking about most of the time.

This has happened to us a few times .. We Live on a dead end street that is connected to what is called Louisville Loop.. (https://louisvilleky.gov/government/louisville-loop)

We get people walking past our house on the street going to there and walking to the parks. In The front of our home is a huge Bay Picture window and Our 7 Foot Long tank is directly across the room. From standing on the street and looking at the front of our house you can NOT MISS Seeing the tank. it lines up perfect with the window and looks like the window is actually the tank. ( reminds me i should take a picture ) So i have had two neighbors and a total stranger ask me about the Window Aquarium... Our UPS FED-EX guy mail man and everyone else always ask about it...

I Would spark a conversation with the neighbor outside rather then knock on the Door.. Some might find that creepy not realizing how visible the tank is .
