I've been researching the appropriate skimmer for a 350 - 450 gallon system for ages. I thought I'd pass on the results of what I've discovered.
I bought my CS-250 a while back, with the single sp5 pump. I've been concerned it will be too small. I've followed your concerns Mike, with some interest
I've looked at changing to a Barr Aquatic with dual beckets (too much electrical consumption for the big pump), I've looked into other needle wheels including the GEO unit Hop just changed to ($1100.00 skimmer for a 450 gal system seems like good value), a Deltec 702 or the 1003 that Vegasmike just switched to (tooo much $$$), Aqua Medic used by the TOTM on Canreef (good value too it seems), or a used ER 12-3 or RC500.
Then I saw Kips TOTM. I looked up the mods to his skimmer, they can be seen here (pg 3 and see diagram pg 4)

He said in that thread (March 06) "EURO CS83 w/ gate valve mod and i swapped out the sedra5000 for a 9000.... i love this skimmer"
So I emailed KIP yesterday about his ER 8-3. He confirms its just the two mods. I asked if he might tell us if it's a modded pump, but I do not think so. I saw a Sedra 9000 for roughly $110 somewhere yesturday.
Anyway, this has put my mind at rest. If KIP can be happy with the ER 8-3 on his amazing system, with all those fantastic corals, and the growth he has obtained, then surely a CS250, even with the stock SP5, will serve perfectly well for at least a years.
