How do you distinquish b/t male and female in the severnsis? A lfs had gotten 3 in a couple days ago but sold real quick.

Here is a couple of pics of mine.

My male:

And a shot on my pair, what I think is a female on the top, male on the bottom but they do hang out together most of the time. The other to are Small Tail Pencil Wrasses.

i didn't catch them... :( i will be able to catch them soon but they are sooooo deep (120+ feet) and only in certain areas, so i need a boat. My friend who dives 3-4 times a day catches a lot of flames. I got them from him... The male has flashed a few times :)

I've only had them for about 2 weeks (well not a month) but im back in Hawaii for school and my father is taking care of my systems. I think im going to get another female, and when i upgrade to a 210 ill get a school cuz they are just so beautiful.

I think im going to add a pink margin and another one, but only when i upgrade... lol

I recommend flame wrasse to everyone... they are truly amazing and hardy :)

That has to be awesome to see those beautiful flames in the wild. Do they normally swim at 120 ft deep? How big do the flames normally get. My guy loves to flash. He thinks he is king of the tank, but the place is reserved for my big pink margin. Are flame girls hard to get? My LFS gets all the rare stuff in says he hasn't seen them on the list in a while. Just curious.

Hi Bronco,
Thanks for the positive location ID on my Scotts wrasse. he's quite beautiful.

I finally added him to the community yesterday. He spent 2.5 days in a specimen container, during which time he was eating mysis, and "holding his own" against any wrasse/fish that came up to inspect him. The specimen container method works awesome! My solar and flavidorsalis couldn't even care less of the Scotts when I added him.

However, I noticed something weird last night while watching the tank. He seems to only stay near the surface of the water, at times even bobbing his head out of the water. He even jumped a couple of times. No other fish were near him at these times, so I cant' say that it was caused by stress from another fish. Should I be concerned?

He was drip (Hospital IV drip) acclimated to my tank's water for over 2 hours. I'm actually quite happy that I didn't place him in the isolation / qt tank as it has no cover... I'd surely have an expensive fish stick right now.

tang_man,

At this point I wouldn't worry too much about that. May just be some lingering nerves by the fish. If he is eating well and swimming around he'll eventually settling down. Now if he is gasping for air at the water surface then that might be a whole other issue. Perhaps something that internally is making him sick.

I'd just observe him for now. Your descriptions don't seem very serious right now

ghever,

Use mysis shrimp to get him to eat. Once they start eating they are pretty hardy. Get him a mate if possible in order to retain the fantastic coloration he has. Without a mate he will fade a bit. Not extremely but not as pretty as he is now. He needs sand to bury himself in. Other than that he'll be a model citizen in your reef.

thanks Bronco

I have been feeding mysis with some brine shrimp as well... he hasnt eaten it yet, keeps making a move at the stuff, but doesnt eat it.. I have observed him pecking away at live rock, so I think he should be eating soon.

If anyone ever finds a female severensi, let me know..so hard to find out here...they are hard to find, but I got this guy for $39...

Thanks Bronco,

I'm at work and looking at him through my webcam right now... So atleast he's still IN the tank... ;). I'll keep an eye on him and report back.

Thanks,

ghever,

The pencil wrasse family is interesting in that the females of each type are completely different in color from the males.

In the case of the black hat penicl you have (severnsi) the female is a orange yellow color from head to tail.

Same is true for the other pencil wrasse you should in your tank with the black hats. I'm talking about the candy pencil wrasses. The specimens you have are males because they are green with the yellow and blue lines down the center of the body. The females for this type are pinkish-yellow overall.

It's very tough finding the girls of either type because collectors and distributors always purchase the gaudily colored males. You'd almost have to special order to get females and be hopeful that your supplier feels like following through on that.

Haha you have a webcam on your tank? That is awesome!!!!

hehe yeah, it's great to be able to check in on my tank while at work. :)

Bronco,
My Scotts seems to be settling down. Eating mysis like a pig with the whole community.

Bronco,

Not sure if this question was aked before but would you recommend adding say a male scotts australia with another male scotts from cooks island?

No way, it would be world war three. Don't add two males of the same specie, even though they are collected in two different areas they are the same fish. I heard from my LFS that cook island is off limits for collection every couple of years, are they collecting again from the area?

update...

update...

the pencil has eaten is doing just fine (cross my fingers)..

I dropped a mussel in there and he and the solarensis were just devouring the thing...he has a big fat belly now, so I am not worried about him for now....

I should be getting a mated pair of flame fairys soon...

they are only found 100+ feet. You will never see them any shallower! its quite strange. And they only live on rubble bottoms, and that is limited in Hawaii. Mostly they are found off drop offs at the bottom. They are very fast and hide right away, but if you fence catch you can catch a few at a time.

The males get big. My friend has seen them 5+ inches... He said they are just outstanding colors and beautiful. The females are more abundant then males, but no one catches the females because they are worth less, unless they get pairs.

The males dance like crazy in the wild and bounce around on the bottom.. it is quite amazing. I can get pairs pretty readily here.. thats why i brought some home!! :)

Craig's Reef,

I would not try adding two male Scott's fairies together regardless of where they are from. They will still be almost identical in colors and that will make for some heavy disagreements in the tank. In the wild when two males meet up and fight, the losing male can always run away and find a new territory. In the tank the loser has no where to go.

One exception is this. If one of the males is incredibly large, and the other is closer to being a juvenile...or just significantly smaller, then you may get the larger male to tolerate the smaller because he may not feel a threat, specially if you have no harem in the tank for him to protect. What likey will happen is the younger male may begin a slow sex reversal back to female or just become what is sometimes called a dormant male. He'll lose his colors and he'll stay in the in-between stage of sex reversal.
