I can get another pair of flame wrasses for $115... so basically, it would be that, plus half the shipping which is now $60... so $145 for a male and female pair of flame fairy wrasses... anyone interested let me know ASAP... I am getting them this Saturday.

PS:Moderators, I hope this is ok to put on here, if not, delete. Just trying to help others out here find a pair of rare fish for much less than in stores...

attach your cup up at the top of the water level of your tank. keeping the water level just slightly below the hole you drilled. He won't be able to get to the hole there. Plus it will be easier for feeding purposes.

Scotts Fairy (Fiji) will not leave the Solar Fairy alone. They have been together since Sunday and tonight he is relentlessly chasing the Solar. Should I separate or wait and see if it subsides? Should I try a mirror?



Another question. Since I have a 75g reef setup, with 1 perc, 1 LMB, how many Wrasse's could I manage safely in this setup? Any recommendations as to an additional Wrasse tankmate for these guys?

he is not putting his nose in the holes he is rubbing it on the sides of the box.
the other wrass will not go up to the top so there would be no point.
 
bronco.. How many females to male ratio would be good so a male will achieve a supermale coloration but not kill the smaller male?

I wanted to do 2 males and 7 females in a 180 or 210 along with some other fish.. If not 2 males, i love mine and is very attractive and was thinking of a harem of him and 4 females.

any thoughts?

Is he just chasing or is he actually biting the solar. Chasing is no big deal, that will subside. If he is slowly tearing up the solar than that is another thing. How long did you acclimate the solar in a specimen cup?

There is no set ratio for a captive state. The more females you can afford both in money and in tank space is the best answer I can give you. If you place a second male of equal size there will be horrible fights and one of them may die. If you place a younger male there may still be some fights, allthough that is dependant on many factors. I'm trying to understand something.

Do you have a male already and you want to get him a harem PLUS get a Supermale and a harem for him?

Quite honestly I'd stick to having just one male. If you have a male already use him as your harem leader and get him 6 or 7 females, or whatever you can afford.
His colors should eventually show up nicely and you'd be able to view some natural harem behavior.

Let me say this about Supermales. Large adult fairy wrasses typically don't fare very well in the shipping process .It's 50-50 at times. Their survival rate is not as good a younger specimens. Stress and temperature fluctuations are the main causes of wrasse death in shipments and wild caught Supermales. I'm not saying you can't be successful in purchasing and bringing a Supermale home (of any kind of fairy wrasse breed), I'm just saying that it's not as easy as you think. Hopefully the diver collecting the fish has been gentle with it and has properly housed the fish during the time it waits for shipment. The success rate for large Supermales is sometimes dependant on how good the supplier/ distributor/lfs was.

I forgot to answer the second part of your question. In your 75 with the current roster of fish you have I think you can do maybe two more wrasses.

Good candidates are:

Yellowfin fairy
Flame fairy
Orangeback fairy
Social fairy

Just to mention a few. You've got plenty of blues with the solar and the scott's. I think you should dive over to the reds, pinks and orange for your next fish. Just remember that fairy wrasses are big time eaters and they produce a lot of waste so you need good filtration in your system. A strong skimmer, lots of LR and a Refugium is a very good idea with lots of brillo pad caluerpa in it.

Thanks for the shopping list. As soon as the other guys settle down I can think about adding one of these.

As far as the tank setup. I am running a Tubze 9010 skimmer, 100lbs LR and fuge is full of caluerpa. I think I am good to go.

Mostly chasing. I didn't know about the specimen cup thing. Can you give me a brief explanation?

Surf backwards on this thread....just a few pages back and you'll see what I mean about the speicimen cup. All the explanation is there and many of the folks that regularly participate on this thread have used this method with great success in introducing new wrasses into a tank and avoiding fights.

Not really. If you know where to look, flame wrasses can be quite common at 40'-60' (and deeper, of course). They do indeed like rubble, but can be found in algal meadows and on reefs occasionally.

Flame wrasses aren't really rare, but they're a pain in the @$# to catch. They swim like crazy and seem to always find the one hole in your net that you were too lazy to patch. There's always plenty of demand for them too, which keeps the prices up.
 
i stand corrected lol.. My friend actually caught a pair the other day at 60 feet.

RGBmatt - do you collect? I've been so for 3 or 4 months :)

i was thinking of getting a changing male to add to 7-8 females and my existing pair now. Would my male now change into a supermale if there was a less dominant changing male?

I dont want to cause any excess stress on either male so i wouldn't mind having a harem with one male.

just curious if it was possible

Your current male would be a bit irritated at the presence of a new male. Even if it were a younger specimen in the middle of a sex change from female to male. If indeed the new specimen you're adding is younger or juvenile what will likely happen is that the older male will chase him around quite a bit. Eventually the younger male will begin a process of reverting back to female becuase the presence of a stronger older male is in place.

As far as your older male becoming a Supermale, well that's hard to say. I think that at minimum your older male will enhance his colors a bit and certainly play the role of "king". As far as how big he will get in a captive enviroment, I don't think that is something we can say with all certainty due to the lack of past experiences with this breed. Very few hobbyists take the time to build large harems and track the development of the fish and how this affects them. Usually hobbyists just buy the male of each species becuase it's so brightly colored as opposed to the female. While I have heard of sex changes in isoloated cases. I haven't heard of someone taking a male with a harem and have him grow into a full blown supermale. You're in a great position because of where you live and the access you have to these fish. If you're able to dedicate your large tank to this purpose, by all means do so. I think you'll have a very pretty display of fish since these fairies are so bright in coloration (even the females). I think you'll eventually have a very beautifully colored male that will regularly display and dance for the girls. How big he'll get or what other color characteristics he might develop.....can't really say.
