I'm assuming that what you're calling a painted fairy is what is normally called a solar fairy.

Yes you can keep them together. Even though the painted fairy has a overall blue coloring like a Scott's they are completely different in size. A Scott's is one of the largest fairy wrasse breeds while a solar is medium sized at best. In this case nature is staggering the size for you.

I keep these guys together and the only interaction they have is if the solar gets to liberal with the space the Scott's calls his own.

I have had the Scotts for sometime now and added a solar this weekend. The Solar was pretty terrified at first and the Scotts spent much of his time making sure he stayed this way. He seems to be settling in now and spends more time out and about.

Just making sure I didn't need to separate.

Another question. Since I have a 75g reef setup, with 1 perc, 1 LMB, how many Wrasse's could I manage safely in this setup? Any recommendations as to an additional Wrasse tankmate for these guys?

Thanks.

I love those pics of the flames. Can they co-exist with a carpenters flasher? The colors are close so I had shyed away from that in the past.

i am planing on getting some more Fairy wrasses.
i want to get a flame wrasse pair.
a Scotts like the one tang man has.
solar fairy
will they all get along?

and a Laboutei fairy wrasse for my 50 gallon

This may be of interest ONLY to chicago area folks, but Deep Reef Aquatics in Downers Grove has excellent Fairy Wrasse and Butterfly selection. This includes R A R E ones as well as common ones. The rare ones are not cheap, but that is to be expected. I think that Jeff specializes in these two groups of fish.

Thats where I get all of my fairy wrasses and fish. Jeff gets in all the cool stuff. No one else in the chicagoland area maybe besides old town and living sea can get anything rare but there prices are crazy so i just stick to deepreef.

Do any of these shops have websites?

Hi guys,

I have a new (upgrade from an 180G) 280G (72x36x24) open top tank (no bracing) with a 2.5ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ lip around the whole tank. Right now Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m using eggcrate to cover it. Once I put in the final canopy, can I leave the tank open as long as I seal the back of the canopy with screen door mesh? My concern is that if a wrasse jumps out and lands on the lip it will not wiggle back to the water. What do you think are the chances of this happening? Am I being too paranoid/careful?

Thanks

Mike

Mike,

My tank is set up with the same type of bracing and I have an open top with a fully enclosed canopy. The back is closed with eggcrate. I keep many wrasses and have never lost one yet.

They will wiggle their way back into the water. My only problem is that occasionally one will land in one of the overflow boxes. I flood the tank and box to above the overflow weir and coax them back into the tank. Works like a charm.

Thanks Redfish. My two overflows are not a problem as they are covered with an acrylic cap. I think Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ll go for it and see what happens.

I picked this guy up. I think is a male flame wrasse (is he?) Sorry for the bad pic is not easy shooting through two panes of acrylic.

He's fairly small around 3" or so. Seems in pretty good shape, was eating some leftover brine shrimp in the LFS collection cap and ate some more brine after I put him in his breeder cap for acclimatization.

cute little flame male! He just changed!! :) I wonder if he changing males will change into supermales without any females around? Maybe Bronco knows..??

zemuron114 & jmicky41,

Not likely that will happen. In an artificial enclosed system without a harem of females the male has no reason to show dominance by way of size and color.
For starters you mentioned that he seems young and small. Which means that without females he will sexually take a step backwards in the sense that he won't mature as a full blown male. He'll likely stay a dormant male. He'll still grow with feedings and be a beautiful fish (Great upside on flame fairy wrasses is they never fade in color), but you won't achieve the size or coloration of a true supermale in a captive enviroment. In some cases you might find some wild caught Supermales that are captured and sold. If you find one of these, you'd have to immediately purchase 4 or 5 females with him to help keep his colors vibrant. Or if you had to wait a few weeks for the females to become available for purchase, one thing you could do to help the fish keep his vibrant Supermale colors is to add a mirror to the side of the tank. This will trick the Supermale into thinking there is another Supermale invading his territory.

Interesting that you say to add a mirror. In my tank with the way the lights are setup I think I get a bad reflection in the tank and my rose scale is flaired up all the time. He has great color, but his bottom lip is raw and beat up from rubbing against the glass. It is the only wrasse that reacts this way. My yellow fin and Scotts don't seem to notice the reflection, and it is evident with the scotts that his color has faded a bit. I just added a solar yesterday and he has super colors. I hope he keeps them a bit.

With that would it be too much to add and exquisite with my rose scale, scotts, yellow fin, solar and a candy hog in my 135. I don't want to push it. I also have a rabbit fish and a few small gobies.

I had a pair of flame wrasses (Cirrhilabrus jordani) and lost the large male (jumped to the floor). The lone female grew large and changed into a full-blown male over a period of a year. It subsequently jumped to its death as well, but not until it was both large and gorgeous. :)

IME, C. jordani is somewhat unique in both obtaining and retaining supermale coloration in captivity even without the presence of a harem of females or rival males.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the info. I'm going to try and get him a lady or two, I think that would be fine in a 280G tank. Does anyone knows who has them for sale? Any idea on the cost of the females should be?

Thanks

Mike

anyone want a flame??

anyone want a flame??

If you are in the socal area, I might be able to get another flame fairy with the pair I am ordering from Hawaii... looking to split shipping costs, so if you are in So Cal area, let me know.

I plan on picking up the shipment probably this Saturday at LAX. Shipping is $55 so if someone splits it with me, you can get a flame fairy for around $100 which is cheaper than MOST LFS.

let me know
G
